i noticed that quite a while ago (maybe a year or more) the gallery roulette or however one would call that ribbon above of the topics was changed, it seems that it is now hand-picked and someone uses the tag “wow” for it. while i dont mind that this acts as kind of a quality control but this also narrows down the projects immensely showing the same projects over and over again over weeks if not months which has become seriously boring.
then i definitely rather see all entries rotating for a while like it was before which was really not that bad. I understand if someone repeatedly posts unfinished experimental projects in a high frequency that this might lower the quality a bit, but maybe it could be handled that one person gets to enter a certain amount of projects in a certain amount of time, the same is true for much “higher quality” entries with the same style either, which are no doubt very good but which unfortunately also increase the chances of making that roulette boring again because i see the same style over and and over.
also some really interesting projects are not even shown, when i occasionally click into the gallery to see what is added because i just cant believe how narrow the selection has become i often find to my surprise projects that in my opinion would be definitely worth showing far more than some random jewellery (no offence) which is obviously not my opinion alone looking at the likes these projects have which often outnumber the actually “wow” advertised entries by far.
so everybody or anybody that just peaks in participates in the selection? currently it looks like the favourite selection of one or maybe 2 individuals much rather.
i would love seeing the roulette become more diverse again. posts like this one below for instance which are nerdy is all about introducing diverse ideas, not just about nice renders or nice models.
not a huge fan of all of his works but this one below for instance would deserve a place there either, because it is something that creates an impulse and might motivate people just the same.
I registered on here barely a year now from august 2024 and i dont know mcneel folks from before yet i get these “favorable” wow tags on some of my projects so how is it nepotism?
i assume he is talking about nepotism in a more metaphorical manner.
please don’t misunderstand that but you are indeed one of the favored users in the gallery roulette i am sure you don’t mind how it currently works out, so your input might not help much if at all to democratize, individualize or at least randomize the gallery again.
I don’t really care to be honest remove the wow tags I would still post projects here I just reacted to the nepotism which would suggest I as a fairly new user, would not get these tags yet I still get them sometimes.
Here is some food for thought tho: let’s take 2 of my projects “electric heating Irons” and compare say the product category
How many existed before August 2024 in the gallery with the same or comparable level of detail/render that I output?
ANSWER= 0 and you can check yourself
of course it’s going to stand out I put alot of effort into them. Iron1: 4 days iron2: 9 hours, go figure why it gets wow tags and i am 100% certain anyone else gets these if they just put in some effort with the software.
Also I do not see many entries on a monthly basis
But you are right i am not of help here for the cause just putting things into perspective so i will leave it at that.
it is not about how skilled you are or how skilled you think you are, the gallery is a place or at least should be for a lot of different kinds of works.
lets not bloat it with more ego revealing content.
We are not censoring anything but the regular things that get censored on fora.
The top row is hand picked. We started doing this because it was getting flooded with projects of a single or couple frequent posters.
while i dont want to interpret his words, “censoring” might have not been a good choice, to be fair still hand picking the images for the roulette is maybe something that almost feels like it.
i completely agree that measures had to be taken,
but the way it currently is is going too much into the other direction either being way too tight. looking at the same images for months and months from a few selected users is just boring with very little new introductions at least it very much feels like it. Also it currently seems to focus on jewellery, industrial design, and some rare architectural posts, and some even rarer random cool posts which could be way more either but completely neglects other really good projects that dont follow the traditional design paradigms.
i know you are tied to the system the discourse has laid out, but maybe there is a way to limit the amount of uploads to the gallery per month per user that appear in the roulette, maybe allowing the people to tag an image once per month themselves for instance.
The banner is the banner, the admins pick our favorites and they get promoted. As more images get tagged, discourse randomly cycles thru them.
Don’t believe me? hit the f5 key and the banner will refresh with new images. Hit it again, more new images.
We do not censor, favor particular users or have any other real or perceived nonsense going on in relation to the banner images. It is not a contest, there are no prizes, we own and operate the site, our admins pick the images they like, simple as that.
(the exception to above we do remove images we feel are offensive, as we have always done)
We do not allow people to tag their own work because that has been abused. (and if anyone does self tag, we remove it for the aforementioned reason)
the banner gets more diverse as more work gets promoted with a banner tag, at that point it becomes a bit of a black box as discourse then randomly cycles thru them.
Want to see all the images our amazing users create?
what i definitely dont like is the tone of your response. other than being purely cynical and in that manner highly offensive it is also not very informative, if you want to piss off users that are trying to participate with a lot of passion, that is indeed a very good way to do it.
i assume you might have just missed the very few essential key points all this was about.
you seem to have some sort of double standard for many of your responses, on the one side all the users are amazing, on the other side they are not taking part in your amazing banner.
a simple freaking banner that has becoming boring because it keeps showing the same images over and over again? dont believe me, hit f5 still dont believe me keep hitting till you probably get bored seeing your own pictures over and over again. though i very much doubt that.
I wonder if there is a more subtle “problem” with the tag. Not so much the tag, but the rate of new images.
I also noticed that my Starship keeps appearing all of the time, to the point I also got suspicious.
I wonder if the random selection process only occurs for “wow” items in the last “n” months. Some of the other images with the tag have stopped appearing in the banner.
Perhaps this also highlights the ever decreasing use of forums as a centre for posting art and renders. Though the selection process may be non-democratic, perhaps there is a large element that even in the case that bias is or is not present or provable, there are fewer images anyway to select from?
Some of the old and massively popular art forums and sites have really fallen quieter in the age of TikTok and media with seriously shorter attention spans required.
Maybe if “wow” is to stay, the range of time needs to be increased to a year or so.
