Black in view capture

Well, it’s June 2020 and I’m having the same problem. View Capture to File shows the preview of the raytraced image ok and then grinds away for some time, but produces a weird result: an image file of a few black items. Any suggestions? Help!

Open your Notifications panel.
Does it suggest a display driver update or two?
If see, see if that helps.

Thanks John, but that didn’t work. See the attached screen capture.

Now, it’s just giving me an all-black image.

I updated my Nvidia GeForce driver to the latest one as well as all my office updates. Any other suggestions?

Cheers,

Dave

What happens if you use a more reasonable capture resolution like “Viewport”?

Same result. See the attached screen capture.

Funny thing is that it worked OK at the original high resolution a couple of times, but stopped working today.

I try an capture at resolutions high enough to print in a magazine. I can always de-rez, but you can’t up-rez.

Cheers,

Dave

Hmmm…

Please run the SystemInfo command in Rhino and return the results.

I suspect the problem is your old Intel display driver.

Please install this one from 5/29:

Better?

Hi John, Dave,

We have been having this same issue in V7 with a very heavy/taxing scene with PBR materials. It was reported privately with scene provided.

The viewport in render mode was struggling to display the model. Even as I rotated the camera I was having trouble keeping the model displayed. Sometimes the entire viewport would go black (even before doing Viewcapture to file). Sometimes the viewport would finally catch up, but viewcapture to file/clipboard would return a black image.

In that model when I run _TestMaxspeed I was getting about 1FPS refresh.

After some changes in the display pipeline in our case the FPS when up to 10 in this weeks build. And that’s seems to be enough to give time to generate an image.

In your case you might not see improvement in this weeks WIP, since your problem could be based on just a heavy model, not heavy PBR textures. But it would be worth checking what’s your _TestMaxspeed in V6, and in this week’s V7. And if one of them is still slow this might point to the problem?

I think _Viewcapture commands shoudl be tweaked so they take their time and do produce an output, regardless of how slow the display refresh is.

I hope this helps,

G

Well, I tried that but still no luck. The Intel driver has been updated, but see the result in the attached screen capture.

This isn’t the full black screen, but the weird black artifacts I was getting.

Would the Intel video driver be a factor here, in any case? I have my Nvidia GeForce 1060 set for Rhino and for my large screen display, which is what I use for Rhino.

Cheers,

Dave

I out of ideas.
I will need your file.
It looks like it’s too big to attach to a message to tech, so please use the Upload a file to Support tool

Please include this URL so we know why you sent it:

Try disabling penguin, orca, and flamingo in the plugin manager. Restart Rhino and try viewcapture again. This will let us make sure that a plugin isn’t somehow involved in the issue.

Steve, John:

I disabled Bongo, Bolt Gen, Rhino, Penguin, Flamingo and Orca. Still got the same result on View Capture to File. See the attached screen capture.

I uploaded the file to your server a few minutes ago.

Cheers,

Dave

Dave -

This model is going to need a few layers of fixing to try and get it to fit on the video card memory.

First of all, run Analyze Pulldown > Diagnotics > Select Bad Objects. There are 26 in the file. These need to be fixed. Here are details on fixing bad obejcts: https://wiki.mcneel.com/rhino/badobjects .

The render mesh contains 17,311,107 mesh faces. We like to see less the 10 million, even less if possible.

  1. 7 million of these faces are in the two dingies and 4 jetskis.
  2. 3.1 million faces on the hardware layer
  3. 1.5 million faces in the chairs and tables on the back deck
  4. 1.1 million in the lifeboat pods.
  5. 730,000 in anchor gear and anchors.

I would look at each one of these parts of the models and determine how much these models could be reduced and still fulfill their role in the rendering.

I run a large Nvidia RTX 4000 video card with 8 GB of memory. The larger video card allows for a larger model. Here is the rendered mode in Rhino 7:

And the Rendered viewport in 7:

FYI in Rhino WIP you can use Rhino Render directly without needing any viewport in Raytraced mode. This should help in getting renders with the same engine as Raytraced saved.

Thanks Nathan. I haven’t gotten around to using Rhino 7 WIP yet. I usually don’t monkey with the WIP versions. Any rough (non-binding) estimates on R7 release date/year?

Cheers,

Dave

Our best guess at this point is sometime this year.

Thanks
