Ambient Occlusion Reduced when Detail Viewport Reduced?

Hi,

I was wondering if there was a solution to this problem or if it is just baked into the way ambient occlusion works.

When the rendered detail viewport is larger the shadows are much stronger (Example on the left), this amount of shading is ideal for what I need.

However, when the detail viewports are narrower/smaller, the shadows are very light (Example on the right). I assume this is something to do with the distance between the camera and the object.

I would like it so all the shadows are consistent and stronger. Let me know if this is possible.

Thanks!

hi @Joseph_Richer I don’t know if this is possible with AO tech, but I logged
RH-99309 Ambient occlusion different based on detail cropping

Hi Joseph,

Maybe this info is helpful - the AO shadows are view-dependent. In perspective view, the lens length affects the amount of shadow. In parallel view the distance from camera/zoom level may do the same.

I can’t test it on Mac, but I translated the script to Python in case it was helpful:
DIG_SSAO_TuneUp.py (4.2 KB)

The setting is global, so you can’t set it per-view. So in your particular case you could “bake” the details as raster images, or as a work-aroun, instead of parallel projection you could use some 4000+ lens that basically looks like parallel projection but the shadows are controllable (via the script) and consistent in all views regardless of the crop.
