Wish: brush selection, drag selection of sub-d faces or (mesh faces)

Coming from Modo or similar polygon modelers, there is the option to brush select faces. brush selection of the sub-d menu in Rhino is only selecting full sub-ds and looks weird.
I use Ctrl+Shift Selection for sub-objects but this selection would drag the selected objects instead of increasing the selection. Would be nice especially for selecting subd faces in shaded view that the Ctrl-Shift-Selection would only increase or decrease the selection of faces like in a normal brush selection. Would be way easier to work with subds. Maybe there is a way to implement that. Currently I am using the method by ctrl+shift select polygons one by one.

You can CTRL+SHIFT + brush:

(You can set to polyline=no option to select disjoint areas better…)

@Gijs this operation put my 8c/16t 5800X CPU to 98% load.

Also, remember you can CTRL+SHIFT double-click a second face (after the first selected) and you will get a loop selection.
Similarly, you can select face 1, then face 6, and then double-click face 4, and it will automatically select all the faces inside 1 to 6.

@maje90 thank you for the insights concerning face selection. Brush selection with Ctrl+Shift does not work on my end.

You have to complete the selection while CTRL+SHIFT are pressed, from the sound, maybe you lifted them before?
Also, try to set RealTimeSelection=yes.

@maje90 thank you. But I continued to press them until the end of the operation. In your video the behavior is quite different. You see the selection of the faces increasing in realtime. for me there is only a line with no effect. It will only select the whole subd. When I turn selection filter on for faces it seems to work but it will select also the hidden polys and it will be a messy wireframe selection. not like in your video.

what do your selection filters look like?

this is my set up:

note command line options and selection filter options.

works as expected here.

@theoutside thank you. For me it looks like a white line and when I press enter it would only select the whole subd.
It would somehow work (not like in the video) but select the polys and the hidden polys on the other side of the subd if “sub-objects” selected. Despite SelectTroughObjects was set to “No”.

running the latest v8?

help>check for updates

also you have realtime updates set to = no-

change that to =yes in the command line options.

You need to set RealtimeSelection to Yes. You have it on No.

Exploit double click:
double click
I find more useful to actually extract part of my subd instead of going crazy isolating faces/vertexes…

(Rhino still is probably far behind into handling this kind of workflows…)

I have no experience outside Rhino, but please if you do, post example videos of those other software to point where Rhino can mimic them, about handling of selection, control point manipulation etc etc…
Better learn from others than re-inventing the wheel.

@maje90 what software is your screenrecorder? Thank you.

Here are my videos:

  1. the selection brush on my pc
  1. Face selection in Modo

https://www.screentogif.com/ but created gifs often are heavy and I end up using online optimization tools, quite a mess. I use OBS studio for proper full-screen recording.

Why everything is magenta in your recording?
Are your subd object selected before brush?
Please, unselect everything before trying to select anything!
(you can’t select sub-object if the whole object is already selected)
Also, please properly toggle options:
Polyline=No
SelectThroughObjects=No
RealTimeSelection=Yes

@maje90 thank you. the magenta is my selection color from my preferences color settings.
So on my end SelectThroughObjects=No does not work as you can see in the screenshot. As everything is so tedious I would use the methods to select full rows as mentioned above and Ctrl-Shift select faces as Rhinos normal behavior, it seems faster and more reliant.
