WIP crashing on open after video card swap

Hi,

I previously had 2 GTX 970s, to which I added a 1080ti to improve GPU rendering while keeping the monitors on the 970. I just removed the 970s to sell them(the 1080 ti is about 3 times faster at iray than the 970s together, they’re not accomplishing much more than adding a lot of heat to my system,) and swapped the monitors to the new card. On startup now V6 is crashing, V5 seems fine.

Here’s the SystemInfo dump from safe mode, though I don’t see much useful info.

Rhino 6 SR0 2017-9-26 (Rhino WIP, 6.0.17269.9391, Git hash:master @ 5cb9c8306044e6c09248cae4a20968e1caa5b089)

Driver information looks flaky, maybe reinstall them?

You don’t have a Raytraced view opened by default, have you?

No and I had updated the driver after that, though not total-wipe-with-3rd-party-uninstaller first. V5 and iray are fine.

Yeah I did a complete video driver wipe and reinstall and an uninstall and reinstall of the WIP, the issue persists. This is what SystemInfo says now:

Update: I stopped the crashing on startup by load-protecting Cycles.

Can you please find and attach the settings.xml for the RhinoCycles plug-in? Look under %APPDATA%McNeel\Rhinoceros\6.0\Plug-ins\RhinoCycles (9bc28e9e-7a6c-4b8f-a0c6-3d05e02d1b97)\settings

You could try renaming the file to something else, then start Rhino WIP and load the RhinoCycles plug-in again. If that works then I think have fixed the cause to this crash yesterday. RH-41492.

Yeah that seemed to do it. If you want the settings file it’s here.

settings-Scheme__Default_renamed.xml (240 Bytes)

Thanks. The settings file indeed shows the crash was caused by incorrect device configuration. You had a multi-device setup with all three GPUs, which was incorrect after you removed two.

The next public WIP has the fix for this.

Hi @nathanletwory,

I have just had similar problem with latest BETA - disabling Cycles plugin fixed the startup crash.
Attached settings file:
settings-Scheme__Default.xml (295 Bytes)

Thanks,

Jarek

If you rename the settings XML to for instance to end in .txt, does RhinoCycles then still crash Rhino when enabled?

You also swapped your GPU? From what to what?

renaming the file helped - Rhino starts ok.
As for GPU swap - nothing I did knowingly. Any chance Windows Update messed something up? It updated recently…

The settings file you attached didn’t show anything that stands out, so I can only guess as to what the actual problem is. Something changed that made the startup barf.
