Why does this happen to certain media on the forum?

Sometimes I scroll through old posts about things I’m obsessively curious about (lately it’s been the loss of direct, interactive surface modelling tools in Rhino [ahem, VSR]) and see broken media links like above.

Usually, media across the whole post wouldn’t show up, but today I saw this: the first image displays fine, but the rest of the images don’t show?

Just wondering what’s up with that, is it maybe something on my end?

no this is nothing on your end. at some point there was an issue with discourse that destroyed a lot of images. Some could be recovered, but not all.
The result in that thread can be achieved (more or less) with BlendEdge using distance between rails:
