What to do to get metre dims sent in dxf as inches?

Hi,
V5, V8
received a .dxf
I see this

I need to see these dims as inches not m.
I also need to see them not so big !

What do I need to do when creating a 1-1 scale model scale dim to get these to show inches ?
and perhaps also suffix [xxxx m]

I can mess with height and arrow length to get this mess better.

why is it that these that clearly were not massive on sources PC, arrive massive into Rhino ?

Is that normal for dxf or did he export it wrong ?

Cheers

Steve

You should import/open dxf file with a Rhino document already in inches.

Or you can choose to change units of current Rhino document in settings. But not sure dims will change accordingly.

Dimensions size sometimes is ok when imported in correct units. Sometimes not because dxf do not have same dims as Rhino. You would need to tweak the size of the Dimensions. You can create a new custom and change the suffix to inches.

If you go into Properties while selecting a dimension you can change the units here. You also have the option to add a suffix.

For general size (which scales the entire dimension by a factor) you can try changing the Model Space Scale settings.

Hi,
I now do that, I open a new document in inches, then import the dxf.
create a new dim style model scale 1.0 as V5 always wants to make 1:10 scale, damn nuisance) length factor 0.0254 with [xx m] and test to be sure of maths,
get 39.37 [1.00 m]
so thats ok.
apply style to the massive dims.
Its showing overall width 50.68 inches.
thats a bit small, it should be 1995.2756inches [50.68m]
but then realise its converted the dxf into inches in a wrong way.

so importing into a new inches file doesnt work.

I import it into the existing project where the ibject already exists measured 15 years ago, and it comes in as 50,68 inches long, when nit should be 1995.27 inches long, same issue.

Do I have to alter anything in the import box model units layout units ?

what next ?

Steve

stepping stone method…My solution was:-
Open the .dxf into a metres file.
copy paste from there into the existing project inches file.
it came in at correct size, dims were also a lot better. BINGO !
apply my dims style to them,
(mine were 1:10 scale the V5 bug) so best keep all bugs together. for when I take this into V8, when I know what settings will work.

I don’t quite follow, if the dxf file is 1:1 in inches, then Rhino in inches should read it at correct 1:1 scale with no conversion.

But glad you found a workaround.

It was at 1:1 in metres, and opening that into a 1:1 inches saw it 58inches long.
Only importing it into a Rhino 1:1 metres arena, then pasting it from there into the project which was and is 1:1 inches saw it scale accordingly.
Only Rhino knows why it did that.
Perhaps it had been munching on magic mushrooms !

Hi Steve -

No.
DXF is unitless. If you open it in a meters template, the distances will be meters (1 unit will be 1 meter). If you open it in an inch template, the same distance will be inches (1 unit will be 1 inch). You need to know which one is right.

When you open it in Rhino in a meters template and then copy-paste into an inch document, Rhino knows the real size and keeps that real size in the new document (1 unit (m) becomes 39.36996 units (inch)).
