Viewport Border Went Missing

Hi McNeelies (maybe @Gijs or @dale),

Just noticed that the frame/border around viewports went missing in the latest beta:

I tried resetting everything a few times to make sure I didn’t accidentally fiddle with an advanced key. But I don’t think I did. See e.g. these screenshots from last weeks build for reference (i.e. where the frame/border was still there).

Best and a happy weekend,

Anders

Hi Anders,

This was intentional, originally submitted by @Gijs

that’s interesting, I thought you would be the first person to be happy with it. Apparently I removed a pixel too many.

That being said, you have a non standard UI without frame color

This change makes the viewports identical to what’s on Mac. Try the default frame and content colors and you can see why I made this change

I like It! No need to change it back.

Hehe, sorry. I do indeed have my preferences :face_with_peeking_eye:

I prefer the simpler/flatter GUI design of Rhino 7 with the same subtle 1 pixel border everywhere:

So with Rhino 8 and 9 I’ve tried to “emulate” that as much as possible. Which has worked pretty well for me, till this weeks Rhino 9 Beta update:

I’m sorry, but this just looks messy and visually distracting to me:

Would it be possible to at least add an option to get the borders back? Failing that, can you point me to the advanced key that sets the color of the borders between viewports (might work better if I could make that the same as the content/frame color)?

Edit: But other than the issues I’ve reported, the Rhino 9 GUI is looking/working most awesome

I like the reduced style.
Anders is right about the splitter width, for me it looks better like this:

That would be Rhino.UI.ThemeSettings.Frame.ViewportDivider. And it does indeed help a bit. Still much prefer the thin/crisp/subtle Rhino 7 borders though :man_shrugging:

I’ll bring the 1px viewport border back as an advanced option if I can make it optional. Note that the change I made removed that pixel but also the extraneous padding on the viewports, which you probably didn’t notice much because of your single color setup for frame and content background.

For the current default colors the viewport borders are worse ( most noticeable in dark mode, especially when using darker viewport backgrounds).

Thanks @Gijs, much appreciated. If you can’t make it work, I think this setup could grow on me:

Though the inconsistency with both Grasshoppers is a bit jarring. But I suppose the Rhino 8 GUI design with the frame/content background logic is a break with the preceding designs in general. iI would be nice with a bit more consistency across the board (even if that would be adverse to my preference).

RH-96555 Viewport outer border missing in Rhino 9 BETA since build 9.0.26174

RH-96555 is fixed in Rhino BETA

You’re a god damn rockstar @Gijs. Thanks again for adding these back in as an option. Noticed a small bug where these bits are missing when maximized:
