But I find it difficult to anticipate and recall how a layer state is saved when created from a Model, Detail, or Layout Space, especially when any particular Space reflects or determines layer settings in other spaces. Similarly, I have never been clear what should happen if I restore a Layer State in any particular Space when the state includes settings which affect the state of other spaces (like “layer on in this detail only”, which if restored literally could affect all other details, including in some cases on layouts not presently in view.)
The layer settings shown for any Detail or Layout includes settings for model space, and I’m not clear if these should prevail in a Layer State save/restore operation.
These uncertainties make me leary of working with any layer states other than from Model Space, because I feel sure that those will apply globally, whereas I am not clear how broadly the other space’s Layer States should be applying to other spaces.
I’m unclear on what effect a Layer State restoration should have on layers created (or deleted) since the State was saved.
I find these questions a bit confusing to write and they may be equally so to read. But I hope the general query here is discernable. Recursive results seem possible from multiple Layer State saves and restores across multiple Spaces which lead me to fear a quagmire where I think there is probably powerful functionality once one has a knack which I hope to get somehow.
I don’t believe so. But the info in the help docs is pretty good.
The space in which you have a layer state does matter.
When in model views, only model layer properties are saved.
When in layout/detail views, both model layer properties and layout/detail layer properties are saved.
You can restore a layer state to any view you want: model, layout, or detail.
When restoring a layer state created in a model view to a layout/detail view, only model layer properties are restored, as only model layer properties were saved.
When restoring a layer state created in a layout/detail view to a model view, only model layer properties are restored, as only model layer properties apply.
When restoring a layer state created in a layout/detail view to a layout/detail view, both model layer properties and layout/detail layer properties are restored.
You can control what properties are being restored by checking/unchecking the checkboxes at the bottom of the panel.
Scenario 1:
a)Both groups’ master checkbox is checked.
b)All upper group list is checked.
c)All lower group list is unchecked.
Which layer states will be saved from a layout/detail view in i)layout/detail space and ii)model space.
iii)How should the outcome be different if the lower group master box is unchecked?
Scenario 2:
a)Both groups’ master checkbox is checked.
b)All upper group list is unchecked.
c)All lower group list is checked.
Which layer states will be saved from a layout/detail view in i)layout/detail space and ii)model space.
iii)How should the outcome be different if the upper group master box is unchecked?
User testing can suggest answers, and I’ll continue to do that. I’ve found that occasionally bugs or project or preference settings can result in false test results, hence queries about how things should work.
