Unable to create new materials in Rhino 7 for Mac

When trying to create a new physically based material from texture files, Rhino replaces any previously created materials - I can’t create multiple separate files. I am using downloaded texture files from A23D and am a novice, but this seems like a bug and not a user issue.

Hi Nate -

Could you please both detail the steps that you are taking and copy-paste the output of the Rhino SystemInfo command?
-wim

You can create a short screen recording with QuickTime and post that to illustrate the steps you are taking.

Hi Wim,

  1. selecting the “+” in the materials
  2. Selecting “Create Physically Based material from texture files…”
  3. Navigating to my downloads folder
  4. Selecting the .zip file of the textures material I want to create (e.g. “A23D_Stone-Pavement_4K.zip”)
  5. When the new material is created, it overwrites/combines any materials created using the same process as above

I created a short video of the above for reference. Note that the brick is from the dfault Render Content folder and does not get replaces, however the stone patio material A23DTEX will be replaced if I follow the above steps to create a new material.
Rhino System Info.txt (5.1 KB)

Note that this does not happen with materials from the default Rhino material directory.

Thanks so much.

I am not able to reproduce this. I did:

  1. press [+] and select Create Physically Based material from texture files...
  2. select a ZIP with pbr textures
  3. accept texture slot assignment
  4. press [+] and select Create Physically Based material from texture files...
  5. select another ZIP with pbr textures
  6. accept texture slot assignment

I end up with two distinct PBR materials.

Here a recording of what I did and ended up with

The only thing I can see that might be different is your folder location. Is your “textures” folder within the “Render Content” folder?

Here is another video where you can see the issue when I try to add a new material

No, it is under ~/Documents/3dms/textures

I see your second recording. I’ll see if I can reproduce tomorrow.

Much appreciated, thank you.

I am still unable to reproduce.

@maxsoder do you have an idea what might be going on here?

In the video I see that the material gets changed during second 48 to second 49. This is even before the new material is created. Is something changing the texture files?

Is it possible to get hold of those materials. I also have troubles to reproduce the issue.

Thanks everyone. I’ve attached two of the zip files here. It seems that when they textures are selected they all come in using the same name - not sure if this is causing the issue.
A23D_Fabric-Mesh_4K (1).zip (18.2 MB)

A23D_Matte-Wood-Plank_4K.zip (2.7 MB)

Indeed the textures contained inside have the same name between the two ZIP files. Rhino doesn’t deal very well with image file names that are the same, even though they come from different ZIP files, or even different folders.

You are best off renaming the file names. Only change the part A23DTEX, leave the underscore and the part after that.

Thank you so much! This was the issue!
