Toolbar-flyout and popup-toolbar glitch

i use the popup-toolbar for quick access to my most popular commands.
since rhino 5 this does not work anymore, as the popup toolbar is resized to some standard and the buttons get jumbled:

when pushing the popupped toolbar aside it gets resized to the desired dimensions.

but this is not how a popup-toolbar (hotbox, quad-menu,…) should work.

i reported this glitch, when rhino 5 initially was released, but nothing was improved untill now.
any chance this will be fixed in a service release or at least in rhino 6?

another annoying workspace issue:
when closing and reopening rhino or when starting a second instance, my docked tabs sometimes change size and position and have to be rearranged manually.

Hi Roberto,

If I understand correctly, you’re reporting that you…

  • display the pop up toolbar.
  • float it by dragging the title bar
  • resize it to your liking
  • close the floating pop up toolbar
  • display the pop up again with middle mouse
At this point, the pop up aspect ratio is not the same size you adjusted it to while floating. Is that correct? Please let me know if I’ve got it right.

This is working here in Rhino 5 SR8 as I described however and persists between sessions of Rhino too. Make this change with one session of Rhino open and then close Rhino. Then launch Rhino 5 normally to test if the change to the pop up aspect ratio was saved. If you aren’t overwriting the preferences file, this may be due to user account control in Windows. Try running Rhino 5 as admin through the right click menu over the application short cut if so.

Hi Roberto- I think you mean toolbars but just to be sure - do you mean the tabbed panels (Properties/Layers etc) or tabbed toolbars?

hello brian,
i will try toexplain again, more clearly.

how it worked in rhino 4:
1 press middle mouse button
-----> popup toolbar appears (and has the correct size, i.e. the second screenshot in my original post)
2 move the mouse cursor to the desired button and release the mouse button
-----> the command is started and the toolbar disappears automatically

what happens in rhino 5:
1 press middle mouse button
-----> popup toolbar appears (and has the WRONG size, i.e. the first screenshot in my original post) and the buttons dont appear in the logical order that i created to quickly recognize them

my workaround (not very handy, so the popup-toolbar becomes somehow useless):
1 press middle mouse button
-----> popup toolbar appears ( WRONG size, …)
2 release the mouse button and move the cursor to the top margin of the popup toolbar
3 left click the top margin and drag the toolbar slightly
-----> the popup toolbar becomes permanent and now CHANGES SIZE (i.e. now it looks like it should)
4 move the cursor to the desired button and left click it
-----> the command is started
5 close the popup toolbar

BTW: the same thing happens with flyout-toolbars
for example:
i have all my c-plane commands listed as text buttons in one long vertical toolbar (i find this much clearer than a bunch of similar looking symbols). so i resized my “Set Cplane” toolbar to a slim vertical bar and linked this toolbar to a button which resides on the top margin of my workspace.
if i click this button and dont release the mouse button, the toolbar appears but has the WRONG aspect and the buttons are disordered. if i drag the toolbar aside slightly it changes size and aspect ratio as discribed above.

hope i explained it in an understandable way this time.
greetings roberto

hello pascal,
i mean the tabbed panels and some toolbars.
to explain more clearly i attach a screensot of my worspace (@ BRIAN: the screenshot also shows my “Set Cplane” toolbar):

the vertical panels residing on the left and right margins and the toolbars below and in between them sometimes get disordered as discribed in my original post. then it looks like this:

hi again,

SORRY, didn´t read your post thoroughly enough.
yes, thats correct. you’ve got it right !

still i cant reproduce this.
i am now at home and tried it on may laptop, which runs rhino 5 sr 5.
i will install the latest sr tomorrow in the office and see if it helps.

thanks so far
roberto

Okay Roberto,
Please let me know if the latest SR8 build solves the issue on the office computer and running as admin if needed as well. It should work as you’re expecting.

hello brian,
i updated rhino to the current sr8 (before that i had sr7 running on my office machine).
unfortunately the glitch was NOT FIXED, the behaviour is the same as before.
i ran (and always run) windows / rhino as admin.

i attach my _popup_rg.rui toolbar to this mail to see if maybe there is something wrong with the toolbar.
could you please try to import it to your workspace and check if it works in the desired way on your machine?

if it does, do you have a clue, what could cause the problem?

thanks in advance roberto

_popup_rg.rui (560.2 KB)

hi brian,
i found that the strange behaviour has to do with button sizes.
if i use a standard rhino TB as popup it works as desired. if i use my popuprg TB, which contains some text-buttons with non quadratic size, the glitch happens. i rearranged my popup TB and used only quadratic buttons (for the buttons themselves and for the spacers in between), and now it works as desired.
this is valid for the popup TB and for flyout of linked toolbars.

now i have a problem with my vertical “drop down” toolbars as described above
i have all my c-plane commands listed as text buttons in one long vertical toolbar (i find this much clearer than a bunch of similar looking symbols). so i resized my “Set Cplane” toolbar to a slim vertical bar and linked this toolbar to a button which resides on the top margin of my workspace.if i click this button and dont release the mouse button, the toolbar appears but has the WRONG aspect and the buttons are disordered. if i drag the toolbar aside slightly it changes size and aspect ratio as discribed above:
in some cases it works as desired in others not.
i found that it works better if all the text buttons residing one below the other in a vertical TB have the SAME SIZE. so i tried to reproduce the problematic TB by making multiple copies of the buttons, aligning them one below the other and manually fill in the button text, the tooltip text and the command. now for some reason the button is resized (in some cases, in others not) and the glitch reappears.
in total i find toolbar and workspace behaviour inconsistent and it´s really laborious to customize one´s workspace

Thanks Roberto for your feedback and to tell me where you found the issue with your pop up toolbar icons.

@JohnM do you have anything to add here? I’ll try to reproduce this and file a bug in the meantime as well.

Roberto,

Can you send your custom RUI file and let me know which toolbar you are assigning as the pop-up so I can see what happens here?

hallo john,
i attach three rui-files, which you can import to your workspace:
1 with the old popup toolbar popup_old.rui (563.9 KB) , showing the glitch
2 with a new popup toolbar popup_new.rui (498.9 KB) all buttons are the same quadratic size and the popup works as it should
3 the set c-plane toolbar, set_cplane.rui (29.0 KB) which shows the behaviour described above:
i have all my c-plane commands listed as text buttons in one long vertical toolbar (i find this much clearer than a bunch of similar looking symbols). so i resized my “Set Cplane” toolbar to a slim vertical bar and linked this toolbar to a button which resides on the top margin of my workspace.if i click this button and dont release the mouse button, the toolbar appears but has the WRONG aspect and the buttons are disordered. if i drag the toolbar aside slightly it changes size and aspect ratio as discribed above.
please tell me if this works for you and if you can reproduce the glitch.
if you cannot i can send you my complete RUI from my office machine later.

Roberto,

Thanks for the files, I was able to reproduce the problem and will look into it this afternoon.

great - thanks!

Hi @BrianJ, i can repeat below using (8.0.23304.9001, 2023-10-31):

Hello Clement,
thanks for sharing the Video, it shows very well, what i was trying to explain.
Meanwhile the toolbar size seams to be sticky - at least for a longer period of time. I cant remember the last time I had to resize them manually. I am currently on Rhino 6 SR35. I plan to upgrade soon and from your post I learn that the issue has possibly reinstalled itself
: ((
Hope this is not true and there are efforts tog et around this.

Cheers Roberto

Hi Roberto,

well, 10 Years later it seems that the issue is the same as the old problem with Rhino 6. It seems that it’s not, it is just a Rhino 8 issue for me. Discourse suggested that there is a similar thread with the same topic and your problem description was matching exactly what i see, so i’ve replied in this thread.

thanks and greetings to Innsbruck,
c.

sounds bad!
still hope, the issue will be adressed and there will be a solution.
btw: what software do you use ro make the screencast-video? maybe i can post a video of the current popup-tb behaviour in rhino 6.

Hi Roberto,

it was ScreenToGif. I don’t have any probs with toolbars in Rhino 6, it’s just in Rhino 8.
