Hi, I’ve been having issues of my text not opening in Illustrator as one text, each letter gets it’s own text book which is annoying to work with. I use layouts then print to save as PDF, I’m not really sure if it’s a Rhino problem or an Illustrator problem. Anything helps, thank you!
What do you use to PDF print? If you have Illustrator I presume you have Distiller…
I “print” it straight from Rhino in its Layout Space to PDF. I also tried exporting a PDF from model space with text, opening it in Illustrator, and the text still comes in individual text boxes for each letter. I assume it’s just like that.
Using what pdf printer? Rhino or Adobe?
I use Rhino. When I use Layouts, I save my drawings using Print > Save As PDF rather than Export > PDF. But either way, the texts still come as individual text boxes for each letter when I open the PDF file in Illustrator.
Hi Evelyn -
I’ve created a ticket for this enhancement request: RH-84424 Print: Annotations to Complete Strings in PDF
Thanks,

Is there a fix for this? This started happening when I updated.
Hi Alan -
No, as you can see, RH-84424 is still open and currently on the “Future” list.
What did you update from?

not sure, any way to tell in the logs? My other computer has Version 8 (8.6.24101.05002, 2024-04-10) and does not have the issue.
Hi Alan -
I’m not sure if there is something in logs to know which version was running previously. I don’t think so.
I don’t have Illustrator but can test round-tripping back into Rhino or see what happens in Inkscape - could you post a simple file that behaves correctly in 8.6 but not in the version you are currently using?
Just to make sure, please also run the Rhino SystemInfo
command and copy-paste its output here.

This change was made to accurately place the characters. There were a large number of bugs reported over the years as the vector output text did not accurately match when outputting text as single entities to PDF. PDF would choose a spacing between characters that did not match what Rhino produces and the text would end up either to wide or too narrow.
I’m still trying to figure out if there is a way to group these characters together to let them be selected together in programs like Illustrator.
I’d be fine using 8.6 on both machines if possible.
Text always behaved a little weird, two lines could never end up as one text box in Illustrator but that was better than individual letters.
Rhino file was created on 8.17 and printed, then opened on 8.6 and printed.
Printed on 8.17
Printed on 8.6
Rhino 8.17.3dm (2.5 MB)
