Spacemouse rotation center won't stay still

  • Windows 11
  • Rhino 8
  • Spacemouse Wireless
  • Spacemouse firmware up to date

I don’t recall exactly when this started, but since some time ago it’s becoming really hard to use spacemouse because the rotation center won’t stay still. It doesn’t move when I’m rotating with spacemouse, but it changes every time I let go of spacemouse and grab it again.

It doesn’t make any difference whether I turn on/off “Rotation Center - Auto” and “Rotation Center - Use Selected Item” under spacemouse settings. The rotation center just changes randomly, regardless of what I selected in Rhino.
I even tried rolling back spacemouse firmware all the way to 2021 version. No difference.

I use one of the buttons on my spacemouse as hotkey for “_MoveTargetToObjects”, which lets me actually navigate normally for a moment, but I end up having to do it every 5 seconds to bring the camera focus back to what I’m working on.

I’ve attached a video where the rotation center (tiny blue dot in the center of viewport) constantly changes, even though I keep bringing it back to the two small fasteners in model.

Does anyone have the same problem? I’d appreciate if anyone has a solution.

Thanks!

Hi,

With the pc on, try removing the transceiver from its usb socket, wait a minute and plug it back in. I’ve found that helps with creep. Let us know if it works for you.

Hi Jeremy. I just tried it and it’s the same.

If you want to lock onto selected objects, try changing from Target Camera Mode to Object Mode.
Then also add a tick to Auto under Rotation Centre, in addition to Use Selected Item. Is that more what you want?

NB You have to have item(s) selected in Rhino for the rotation centre to stick with them, otherwise it gets reset closer to middle of the viewport each time you stop moving (which is maybe what you are reporting?).

Thank you so much! That solved the problem.
I never tried Object Mode because that changed my movement axis, but changing the zoom direction made it move the same way as Target Camera Mode.
So the setting for me was: Target Camera Mode, Zoom Direction - Forward/Backward, Rotation Center - Auto & Use Selected Item.

It still resets the rotation center each time I stop moving, but it’s much more reasonable and not throw me off completely.

你这个设置在哪里找到的?我的Rhino 8.21也是这样

Open 3DConnexion app on Windows and click on Rhino window to focus on, then you’ll see 3DConnexion app shows “Rhinoceros”. Then click Advanced Settings.

Or you can type SpaceMouse in Rhino consol as well.

They started that bandaid trick in V5 prototype drivers I think but really took off in V6 and 7.

It’s 3dconnexion/logitech’s approach to invalidly solving some problems in navigation behavior in Rhino.

To adapt to the silly driver concept you just have to accept that every time you stop rotation or translation the rotation point will reset, and that way you can slightly take advantage of it, other than how random it can be :sob:

Otherwise you have to turn it off and try to resort to ancient driver characteristics which have the major quicksand problem when the camera frustum gets flattened.

I’ve explained the issues over the years at length but the devs have always been too cool to realize how awesome it would be to understand the perfect solution to the quicksand problem.

Users simply would be empowered by controlling the camera frustum. But no that would be too kewl. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Well kinda, but it mostly has to do with what is behind the ftrustum target per say or per chance.

Wells, there’s and old trick where you can deactivate 3dconnexion’s silly driver and use Rhino’s old one or something. But then you’ll have fun with the quicksand problem I mentioned.

That would be more necessary for the quicksand problem, but needed less often haha. The rotation point resetting after ever move makes that approach sound pretty frustrating.

Yes, this has been explicated at length and is just the way it is. It’s still one of the most frustrating things in Rhino as compared to other CAD’s.

Maybe someday Rhino will actually have logical 3D navigation characteristics – until then we either get to pick the quantum point of rotation position undefined, or the quasi quicksand singularity slash reset.

One of the last times I investigated this issue over the last 16 years was here:

And all that happened was the guy (Mr Bonk) never got back to me. So we’re left with that spiderman meme where Rhino pointing it’s fingers at 3dconnexion/logitech and logitech pointing it’s fingers at Rhino.

So, maybe in Rhino 9 or 20 it will finally be figured out.

When 1 touches 4 you hit quicksand, or it’s 2 and 4, idk I forget:

Hence delta x should be ‘constrained’ to prevent quicksand.

Camera frustum widget thingamajig could use an upgrade imo.
