Soft transform curve along a curved surface

I have a model of a chair that I am trying to add more complexity to.

I am trying to create a curve that is higher along the center and flatter along the edges and follows the curved surface of the chair.

This is kind off what I am trying to do

I have tried soft transform and soft move but the results from those were not great.

Attached the file here for reference

Volu_chair_V3_fixed_V1.gh.3dm (1.7 MB)

  • set up your geometry so it fits to world x y z
  • use _reflect
  • use much less faces in the subd

now you can just subd-model it

also nice but a bit tricky:
turn on _editPtOn of the subD.
Now you can _MoveUVN (N in your case) the surface points of the subd…

happy modelling / kind regards - tom

You may give it a try with the new SoftTransform in RhinoWIP

Hello Tom,

Thanks for the help, the model you made is exactly how I needed it.

I would like to know how you got the curve to be so smooth at the bottom surface ?

When I try to manipulate the faces or edges it gives a very sharp curve and looks ugly.

I also tried the editPtOn and MoveUVN commands and it looks like it requires immense patience to move each point into the required position.

Thanks again for your support

Hussain

Thank you for this Jessen,

I will definitely try and get back on this.

are you working with the reduced amount - the rough model i suggested ?

i think i just used MoveUVN - and looked at it from the front view… nothing to special.
you can start with the inner Section of CV’s move them 2
then add the next CVs move all togehter 2
then more → 2
thenmore → 2
… so you move 8, 6, 4, 2 (steps, units or what ever…)

maybe some Gumball-ing but not so sure what i did last week…

if the new softtransform supports MoveUVN - this would be the fastest approach.

Thanks for your reply!

What do you mean by CV’s ? The points ?

When I use the editPton I can drag and move each individual point along the x,y,z axis but getting it to look like a nice smooth curve is what I am struggling with.

I am still a newbie at this software. (I am a lot better at solid works)

Appreciate all your support and help!

yes. CV = Control Vertex
