ShrinkWrap failed to generate a mesh

Title pretty much says it all. ShrinkWrap will not generate a mesh, even with a simple cube. Tried from Rhino & grasshopper with various settings and get the same result.

Same grasshopper file works fine when run on Windows instead of macOS (works fine with ShrinkWrap command from Rhino as well).

My iMac is getting rather dated - won’t update beyond Big Sur, but Big Sur is listed under System Requirements for V8.

I know I need to get an updated mac (probably sooner than later), but even though this one has quite a few years on it it still works quite well with Rhino V7 (and everything else I need to do).

A couple variables here are the Keyshot as well as the Radeon. Its a longshot but can you try in wireframe, no GH preview and your OpenGL tessellation toggle switched (in Rhino preferences)?

I ran mine in a millimeter file with .001 tolerances.

Removed the Keyshot plugin and it still doesn’t work.

I in V8 I don’t see the check box for GPU Tesselation in Preferences → OpenGL:

Here’s the screen I get in V7:

On V8, if I go to Preferences → Advanced and search for Tesselation, I see this:

I’m assuming UseTesselationShaders = False means it is disabled (ShrinkWrap doesn’t work with either setting)

Tried switching modes with the _TestMetal command - still doesn’t work.

I’m in a millimeter file as well. Tried with tolerances at 0.1, 0.01, 0.001, and 0.0001 all without success.

@kev.r You mentioned above that it works from the ShrinkWrap command but I couldn’t tell if you meant on Windows and your Mac or just on Windows? Are you able to get a mesh from the ShrinkWrap command on your Mac?

@kev.r On your mac, when you go to your tools->options and click on plugins, is the ShrinkWrap plugin loaded? This is on Windows, but hopefully it should look something like this.

On my Mac I don’t get a mesh from the _ShrinkWrap command in Rhino or from the grasshopper component.

Both work from Windows (as expected).

This is what I see when I run the _PlugInManager command:

If I un-check the Enabled box and try to use the _ShrinkWrap command, it says:

Blocking plug-in ShrinkWrap.
Unknown command: ShrinkWrap

Also with Enabled un-checked the grasshopper component has an error that says:

1. Solution exception:One or more errors occurred. (Object reference not set to an instance of an object.)

With the ShrinkWrap plugin enabled I get the results shown in my first post (no error messages but it does not produce a mesh):

@kev.r it looks like your shrinkwrap plugin isn’t getting loaded. Grasshopper relies on the plugin being loaded in order for it to make calls into the plugin and get solutions.

This could possibly be a compatibility issue with your machine but its hard to know for sure. Are you able to fidget with the plugin manager settings and get it to say Loaded = yes?

If you can get the ShrinkWrap command working, then the Grasshopper component should follow suit and work as well.

I had noticed before that the Loaded column next to the ShrinkWrap Plug-in was blank but I thought it might be normal because when I looked at the properties of the ShrinkWrap Plug-in, it says Load Time: When Needed

Right-clicking on the plug-in gives the same pop-up menu you showed.

If I select Load plug-in from the menu, the Loaded column toggles to Yes

But it still does not produce a mesh from the Rhino command or the grasshopper component.

I noticed Squish does not say yes in the Loaded column, but the _Squish command works.

I also noticed that if I look at ShrinkWrap in the Plug-in manager right after I launch Rhino, the Version information is blank.

If I then exit the Plug-in manage, try the _ShrinkWrap command, and go back into the Plug-in manager the version information will be populated (no mesh was produced from the command).

I don’t know if any of this is significant, just trying to give you all the information from what I noticed while fiddling with this.

Thanks for checking. Yes, the plugin is structured to load when its resources are needed. I was mostly interested to see if you were getting any error messages if you tried to manually load it. I wonder if any other McNeelies have a similar Mac to do some testing on in the meantime.

Can you copy your system information from the help menu in Rhino and paste it in a post for me?

This morning I deleted RhinoWIP.app, reset preferences by running defaults delete com.mcneel.rhinoceros.8.plist from the terminal, downloaded and installed the latest version of the WIP.

The _ShrinkWrap command still will not generate a mesh.

Yes, I was curious if anyone else still running Big Sur had similar problems with this.

We’ve setup a machine and can reproduce this issue on Big Sur. I’ll see if we can make this work.
