Check the shadow settings for the display mode you’re in. These are in Preferences>Display modes. It’s odd that they would have changed without you adjusting anything though so there might be another reason. A default technical mode that has shadows on is Artistic, which you can also try for comparison. If that has similar shadows, let us know the specifics about your Mac especially the GPU make and model.
I have this problem too since I install the lastest version of Rhino (5A723).
Another issues are in Rendered view, when colours are too bright and Analyze tool like Zebra or Environment Map dosen’t work.
Here is the Artistic View.
Funny, I think it is kind of a nice effect! But I also really like the old way.
Here is my system info:
I have seen this, too. For me, it only happens on one particular model, and only when I have two displays plugged in.
I’d like to get a copy of your model to see if I can duplicate your display issue here.
If you unplug one of your displays, does this model display normally?

looks cool : )
I agree…even though it’s a bug: it still looks cool.
Hey Marlin,
Here is a link to the 3dm file.

It has the Sketchy shadow effect even when I only use 1 monitor.
I disagree, it looks awful. It completely ruined the artistic view, and looks bad on the rendered view too.
Max.
Hi Gang,
I have it too. And everything seems a bit washed out also.
cheers Peter
This is not yet fixed in the 5A731 WIP release. We are still working on this. However, we do know this happens you turn on the Skylight in Render > Render Properties.
not saying it should stay but with edge blurring turned up, it’s a neat effect.
I have the same problem… artistic view was so beautiful I was using it to show the work in progress to clients… but now it looks like that:
Update to the current build. It’s been fixed. in 5A745
It had to do with how the Skylight was being interpreted.
I don’t know why you would want to stay with the old build but you can turn of the Skylight.
We’re on 5A751 now.
Hi John, I’m on 5A751 too. What could be the problem?
Is the Skylight turned on in Render Properties?
If so try turning it off.
If that fixes the sketchy shadows, then the problem has come back and i need to know about it.
Thanks
I thought Skylight meant the Scene Lighting in Display Mode. I found Skylight in the Render Properties and it was on. I turned it off it all works perfect now. Thanks a lot.
Please verify you are running 5A751.
