Rhino8 performance when opening autocad drawings

Is there some trick I can use to improve performance when opening relatively big AutoCAD drawings in Rhino?
Every action, being it, hide, pan the screen, zoom selection takes a couple of seconds and more to do.

This is terrible!

It just sucked in half my RAM using 0.1% CPU.
I feel SSD caching is not used at all?
Can it be? Will it help?
What can help?

Same here. I often import architectural/urban plan sets from not that heavy DWGs, around 5MB, but it slows down Rhino 8 (on Mac M1 Max) to an almost stop.

Writing this, as I’m waiting for the 6th of 20 DWGs to import.. Let’s see if Rhino can
move at all when everything is imported (I have already made most of the layers invisible)

If you want to test for yourself, download a couple of the DWGs of the Berlin plan and import it into Rhino.. Der 2D-Innenstadtplan - Berlin.de

This is not exclusively a Rhino problem. Many 3D application cannot handle large numbers of 2D entities.

I suggest you use AutoCAD or an AutoCAD clone like IntelliCAD, BricsCAD etc and remove the details you don’t need before you import it to Rhino.

For what its worth, I just opened a 7Mb file NW2.dwg from your examples and it very quick to move around in IntelliCAD.

You are using a Mac so your 2D CAD options are limited, although it appears BricsCAD has a Mac version. You might want to try that.

EDIT: I opened this in the Windows version of Rhino and the performance is pretty good.
Can you post your Mac system info? … maybe there is a system specific issue that is causing the poor performance.

Hi @ice,

I loaded up all 6 of those .dwg files in Rhino 8 running on my M3 Max - the response is pretty good.

FWIW…
