Rhino pdf - poor quality vector

Hi - I’ve been having a problem with Rhino PDF vs. Adobe PDF in terms of quality. No matter how high the dpi I set Rhino PDF - it seems to shift much of the linework more grey and less difference between heavy and light linework vs Adobe PDF of the same exact file. Does anyone know how to get in to tweak the Rhino PDF settings/preferences (similarly to Adobe PDF)? Is is a separate file? Thanks all.

you should check this option.

Hi - thank you - yes of course I am using vector. Are there more specific controls over the Rhino pdf controlling the quality. As mentioned- the dpi has already been maximized with no effect on the issue. Thanks all!

vector output has nothing to do with DPI because it is a vector not raster(pixel)
So please upload your file
1: rhino file
2: your pdf printed by your rhino
3: your pdf printed by your adobe

Hi Deer - thank you again for your input - I’m well aware of the difference between vector and raster and only mentioned the dpi because it seems to be the only quality control input available from the print dialog different from the adobe pdf dialog.

Once again - if anyone is aware of a way to tweek the rhino pdf printer - either in a separate file, or in a separate preference menu, please let me know.

Conversely, if anyone should know why the Adobe pdf printer is having issues with blocks/referenced information - that may also solve the issue. With Adobe - the print quality is what I’m looking for but it seems to hang and print much much slower.

So in the end - quality issues with the rhino pdf and speed issues with Adobe. By the way - the quality issues are subtle, not huge, but enough to make a difference for us.

Again thanks all for the input. I may be able to post a small clip of a file later but it is all copyrighted so would prefer to get some general information first.

There is no need to replicate your problem using “copyright” content, right?
If you test your adobe and rhino pdf export with non-copyright content and replicate the “quality” difference. You can post your related file here.

in other words, if you can not replicate the quality difference using a normal file (lets say some random rectangles).
Then the problem probably stays in the copyright content itself.

Generally you should provide more information, as possible as you can.

Deer - thank you again for the input - you obviously have not had these issues yourself and perhaps can not provide much help.

I can test random rectangles, but the fact remains I need to print the more complex
material. If I get the time, I’ll troubleshoot more on my own. Perhaps someone from McNeel could shed some light im the meantime?

Maybe its two simple questions thar could be asked irrespective of the content. First, is there a way to tweek the Rhino pdf printer in a more advanced way than what is available in the printer dialoge screen? Second, is there any reason adobe pdf might have problems with referenced geometry. When the blocks are exploded as live geometry within the file - the issue of print time goes away.

Again thanks all for the input.

yes, I only use Rhino pdf, so far so good, and does not own any Adobe product (not any more).

I am not sure they use the same engine to generate PDF, but since PDF are normal and general format.
I believe what Rhino pdf print consists of multiple simple elements such as line, arc, text…etc. and Adobe pdf generate mostly same elements.

it seems to shift much of the linework more grey and less difference between heavy and light linework

pdf (or *.ai) files can be compared because all these “grey” or “difference” can be digitalized by attributes like “color RGB” “width” “Transparency”
is it possible to open them up in Illustrator and analyze the basic attributes of these elements? such as line width, line color or so, and see if Rhino pdf and Adobe pdf elements are the same.
I use illustrator a lot back in time, from my perspective, comparison between pdf should be simple.

still,I am not sure I fully understand your problem because there is no pdf file here.
you might have to wait here for others’ support, and see if anyone else have some idea or have had the same problem.
good luck!

@paul.meco
Please provide all of the specific detail and example files so we can duplicate the problem.
Then we can understand the problem, suggest a work-around, and maybe get it fixed.

Without those specifics, we can’t do much of anything.

Agree totally.
I can not believe after 9 replys there is no PDF file at all.
So I am guessing he has his own difficulty.
Maybe that problem only occur in his confidential project file, and it is nearly impossible for him to replicate the problem with any other files.
