PDF raster quality is very low

Hi,
I think the quality of the pdf output is too low when raster option is selected. The output It’s a sort of very low quality jpg.
Does exist an option to increase the pdf raster quality instead of export the raster image in png?

Regards

Hi @gabrielefx
I don’t know if you are exporting a rendering or printing to pdf?

If you print to pdf you can change the raster quality there in the quality box. The default is pretty good at 600 dpi but you could put in any number you like.

I assume that you are concerned with the lossy compression of the PDF which is likely to be a jpeg algorithm, changing it to lossless compression is likely not accessible within the rhino’s native exporter. Try using a 3rd party pdf.

This is why I pay the Adobe tax and use InDesign for any sort of remotely elaborate layout. On top of everything else I can specify the PDF export quality settings to a preposterous level.

What do your Rhino PDF settings look like when you export? You shouldn’t really see compression artifacts

Yes, I compared the Rhino 8 pdf output with the one created with Acrobat Pro.
The last one is much better if is it’s set to high, I think I’m gonna use Acrobat Pro. It is much slower than the native Rhino pdf engine but I can tweak the quality…I can set it also to raw.

Hi Gabriele -

Steve’s question was what the Rhino PDF settings look like.
What is the size of the layout and what is the DPI setting that you are using?
-wim

Why don’t you post your Rhino file and *.pdf output with a screenshot of the print dialog?

i suggested there should be slider to set level of compression and it is scheduled for Rhino 9 which is too far

Dear Rhino developers,

Finally I’ve completed a big project using almost 100% of Rhinoceros layout features.
As you can see the Acrobat Pro pdf output (set to high quality) is much better than the one created using the Rhino embedded pdf engine. I don’t know if you pay a license for the Adobe pdf exporter…but we need much better quality for the pdf prints.

Thanks.

Hi @gabrielefx, I’m sure we can get the quality to match what you are looking for with Rhino PDF.

Have you tried exporting with Rhino PDF at a higher resolution?

Hi Steve,
the raster PDF created with Acrobat Pro generated a file of 8.8MB. It was set at high resolution at 300dpi.
The Rhino pdf output is 3.2MB set at 300dpi

Within the Rhino pdf engine you don’t have access to the jpg quality, we can only tweak the dpi resolution.

Zooming in the Rhino pdf raster output you can see the jpg artefacts.

Please watch the two crops:

@gabrielefx would it be possible to send me the 3dm file you are using for this so I can try and repeat this?

i think @gabrielefx suggests you cannot set the compression level because it is fixed to some middle value between heavy and no compression. if there is a hardcoded value of compression in rhino then it is easy to make it adjustable. if it is hardcored without internal variable which affects compression then it is not that easy.

These are things I can figure out if I have a sample 3dm. There are decisions made on things like compression or png versus jpg when creating a PDF with Rhino PDF. I need to see what is happening in this specific case before making any assumed response.

Hi Steve,
I can link you the entire project through my google drive. Send me your e-mail.
