Rhino not responding when I open "named views"

Started having this problem yesterday, whenever I open my file and try to click the “named views” tab, Rhino needs like 5-10 minutes to load it, during which it shows as “not responding”. The problem is worse when I try to switch my viewport to rendered mode, usually it just freezes entirely at that point and no matter how long I wait, it doesn’t unfreeze. This was not a problem previously when working on the same file.

The problem doesn’t seem to occur in a new file when I draw a cube, but I haven’t tested it extensively.

I know I don’t have a great computer, so some slugishness is normal, but Rhino is entirely unusable for me right now and I have no clue how to fix it.

I have tried:

  • Turning the computer on and off again
  • Disabling V-Ray plug-ins (did not help unfortunately)
  • Opening older versions of my file (they are having exactly the same issues, even though they previously worked fine)

Hi Roxanne -

Yes, I’m afraid that’s not something that you can expect to run Rhino 7 on without issues.

That is concerning, though. Do you know what might have changed on your system between the time when it wasn’t a problem and now?

Apart from that, a few things you can try:

  • In a new and empty file, open the “Named Views” panel, right-click in the empty list, and select “List” from the “View Mode” options:
    image
  • Open the Rhino “Notifications” panel and use the links to check for the latest driver for that Intel UHD Graphics 630 device
  • In Options -> View -> OpenGL, try changing some of these settings one at a time:
    image
    • start by turning off “GPU Tessellation” and see if that help
    • turn off Antialiasing
    • put the “Level” slider in a position more to the left

Thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately none of them seem to have solved the issue…

  • Setting the view mode to “List” removed the issue when clicking on the “named views” panel, but didn’t affect anything else.
  • I checked the notifications and updated my graphics driver, but it didn’t improve Rhino’s performance
  • I changed all the settings shown above and didn’t see much improvement.

I did, however, wander my way into the “display modes” options and removed the “advanced texture preview” in rendered mode. That ended up helping a lot and allowed me to get some work done, but it feels more like a band-aid fix than anything else, since it’s still running slower than it was previously and is having some issues with textures when I do full renders.

Otherwise, I can’t think of anything that changed on my system. The only things I use on my desktop are Rhino and Firefox and I haven’t downloaded any new software or changed anything else. Thinking back though, it feels like Rhino has been progressively slower for me after every batch render I ran with V-Ray. At the time, I attributed it to the file getting heavier (since I know my computer sometimes has a hard time keeping up) but the fact that previous versions of my file are having the same problem kind of disproves that.

Is there anything else I can try, or should I just uninstall Rhino and V-Ray entirely and re-download them at this point?

Hi @Roxanne_Gariepy,

Launch Rhino, open the Named Views panel, right-click in the panel and pick Mode > List (not Thumbnail). Then open your file.

Does this help?

For what it’s worth, your system does not the minimum requirements for running Rhino 7.

Hi Roxanne -

No Windows updates? Are you rebooting the PC regularly?

Is your V-Ray version up-to-date? From the description, it sounds like a memory issue…
What happens when you disable V-Ray in the plug-ins panel and restart Rhino?

That is very unlikely to do anything at all.
