Rhino freezes when opening File Explorer dialogs (Import, Open)

Hi everyone,

I am experiencing a freezing issue in Rhino whenever the Windows File Explorer dialog is triggered. I would really appreciate any help or insight.

Issue Description:

  • Rhino freezes/hangs indefinitely the exact moment the file dialog opens (e.g., when clicking File > Import, Save, or Open).

  • Dragging and dropping files (tried to import dxf file) directly into the Rhino viewport also causes Rhino to freeze.

  • Opening files in other software (like ArchiCAD) works perfectly, so Windows File Explorer itself appears to be working fine.

What I have already tried without success:

  1. Safe Mode: The issue still occurs in Safe Mode.

  2. GPU / Display settings: Turned off Antialiasing and GPU Tessellation in Options > View > OpenGL.

  3. Repair & Reinstall: Performed a Repair Install via Windows Control Panel, and ran Rhino as Administrator.

  4. Windows Explorer Tweaks: Cleared Quick Access history and disabled cloud drive sync (OneDrive/Dropbox).

None of these steps resolved the problem, so any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi Naoki -
Please run the Rhino SystemInfo command and copy-paste its output here.

When Rhino freezes, does it recover after a while?

Hi John -

To troubleshoot this issue, please disable this plugin in the Rhino Plug-in Manager and restart Rhino. Does that make the problem go away?
-wim

Thanks for the fast answer.
I did it. I unabled the vray in the plug-in manager and still doesn’t work..

Lets create a dmp file and try and see where it is hung
