Rhino 8 WIP viewport much slower than Rhino 7 and often freezes

That would be great, especially on the ones utilizing shadow effects.

Well, since blocks were mentioned I of course had to try this…

I recently encountered an extremely problematic file to such a degree which I haven’t seen before… it contains a couple of very detailed PCBs with seemingly several hundreds of block definitions:

Rhino 7 (design with nothing selected): 27fps
Rhino 7 (design with one block selected): 14fps
Rhino 7 (shaded with nothing selected): 38fps
Rhino 7 (shaded with one block selected): 15fps

Rhino 8 (design with nothing selected): 38fps
Rhino 8 (design with one block selected): 15fps
Rhino 8 (shaded with nothing selected): 44fps
Rhino 8 (shaded with one block selected): 38fps

Great, however another test did not fare so well:

Rhino 7 open BlockManager: 1-3 seconds
Rhino 8 open BlockManager: 1-3 minutes

And before you ask, this is a client’s file of their approved medical product containing highly proprietary and sensitive things so there will be probably no chance that I’ll ever be able to share it.

Usually, my design view mode not only looks better than shaded, it’s also often significantly faster. This is sadly apparently no longer the case. Also, the colors of it doesn’t seem to work on the WIP anymore (and I also just noticed that the selection highlight in Rhino 8 is the sickly yellow color, while I’ve changed it years ago in Rhino 6 & 7 to be cyan so now I must locate that setting again).

The latest WIP really improved things a lot (around 40% faster).

Shaded:

Rhino 8 SR0 2023-8-15 (Rhino WIP, 8.0.23227.12305) = 9.1 seconds. (10.95 FPS)
Rhino 8 SR0 2023-8-22 (Rhino WIP, 8.0.23234.12305) = 6.84 seconds. (14.61 FPS)

Using Nvidia RTX3070

something I learned from the exercise:

for NURBS Blocks in the viewport performance, the CPU’s single thread performance is more important than the GPU speed or framebuffer!

A) Laptop : Intel i5 12600H with RTX A1000 (4GB) Laptop GPU
B) Desktop : AMD 5950X with RTX A40 (48GB)

The Laptop wins by 20%!

@Rhino_Bulgaria and @eobet the latest Rhino WIP just released should have performance improvements for your custom display modes that you posted above.

Thanks, I just ran the same test on the latest update and can see the following improvements over the version from a few days ago:

Rhino 8 WIP (8.0.23234.12305, 2023-08-22):
Wireframe: 3,81 seconds (26,23 FPS).
Shaded: 6,08 seconds. (16,45 FPS).
Bobi 1: 5,62 seconds (17,78 FPS).
Shaded 5: 15,20 seconds (6,58 FPS).

Rhino 8 WIP (8.0.23241.14305, 2023-08-29):
Wireframe: 3,66 seconds (27,35 FPS)
Shaded: 5,86 seconds (17,07 FPS)
Bobi 1: 5,44 seconds (18,39 FPS)
Shaded 5: 11,05 seconds (9,05 FPS)

Despite that ā€œShaded 5ā€ is noticeably faster now, the response time of the viewport is actually extremely slow during real-time usage. It takes a couple of seconds just to start panning or rotating the camera. The same goes to the other display modes, except that it takes about one second to start panning or rotating the camera.

Hi Bobi -

Did you see this post?

I read it now, however, the same issue is true for Rhino 7, as well.

I’m having problems in Rhino 7 as well, but I cannot seperate the issue as either being Rhino or my Intel Arc GPU. I automatically blamed the GPU, but I am not so entirely sure now. I have not had any issues from April until about a couple of weeks (maybe 3?) ago, and then the viewports started stalling under rotation, and my displays would flicker.
