Rhino 8 update fails "older version of Rhino 8 cannot be removed"

upgrade from SR 4 to SR 5, it happens both

  • after clicking the button in splash screen
  • after manually downloading the installer

Make sure there is no Rhino instance still running. Do that using the task manager.

Killed one, tried again, it did not help.

The error code - cannot be cpied for some reason:

the log:
Rhino_8_20240322133513.log (311.8 KB)

Seems like a 1603 error which may be related to either Windows updates or a dotnet framework error…

This is only for V6/V7 but…

I cannot even uninstall it myself:

Hi -

I’ve put this on Brian’s list so that he can take a look when he gets time:
RH-81181 Installer: Failure case

Hey, I have the same issue, I tried to download Rhinoceros 8 and 7 but I receive the error code: rhino.msi:-2147023293. If you find a solution to the matter keep me updated, thanks

Try this

Had a similar problem before, and the Microsoft tool fixed it

At first I thought I was stuck thanks to a failing Windows 10 update but then I learnt it concerns the WinRE partition and should be theoretically unrelated. This Microsoft tool is what I used in the end to finally uninstall the Rhino 8. What a mess (and this is an OS most computer purchases finance…)

BTW 8.4 was the first version of Rhino 8 I installed, I had not installed WiP either. Nor do I use anything like the mentioned CC cleaner.

I have these three files if anyone at McNeel is interested:
ms uninstall troubleshooter.pdf (316.5 KB)

auto-update was just offered to me, yet again…

you may need to run the microsoft fix it tool several times on the rhino installer app.

I ran it before an previous update which fixed it back then - I did update successfully to IIRC 8.5.
This is a new occurrence. Or are you suggesting I will have to run the MS tool before each update?

(it is hard to imagine installation system this broken if it wasn’t Microsoft but eg. Flatpak)

Is that the only error you are getting, still getting the -2147023293 message or just the one above? My guess is antivirus software if you are running into this consistently. You shouldn’t have to MS Fixit the installer each time.

Just the printscreen above. I didn’t even try to update it manually, this time I was just offered it by the Rhino auto-updater upon closing Rhino (which I think did not always work with previous 8.x versions.)
