Rhino 8 - How to export custom UI to share on other computers

I have created a custom user interface in Rhino 8 (Beta) that I would like to share on other computers. I tried exporting the .ini file in Rhino 8, (just like I was able to do in Rhino 6 and Rhino 7), but when I try to import it into a new custom template on another computer, all of the colors do not stick with the .ini file. Has the method of exporting of a custom user interface changed in Rhino 8? If so, is it still possible to share my custom UI?

Thanks,
MB

Hello - Set up the layout as you like it and then in the Window menu > Window layouts > manage Window layouts , Save that and then select the saved layout and export it.

Any luck?

Hi Pascal - That saved the layout of what I have saved, but it did not maintain the custom colors I created. Please see image below.

Yep, colors are not part of the deal in window layouts.

This is something I, and some others, have wanted to do for many years.

I’ve never put very much time into figuring it out, cause it has to do with the ‘shortcut icon’ that is used to launch Rhino, and the registry key that is linked to it or something…

“schemes” …

The time I’ve put into this before didn’t really succeed much so I gave up.

But I think about it every time I have a colleague ask how they can get their files to look the same on different computers, and why they don’t automatically look the same :joy:

This should also read “Using Schemes to start Rhino with the same sets of options (etc) on different computers”

…“(with the exception of display modes)” – not sure what the point is then…

Well, I wrote that article for Rhino V3 and the last update was V5… Unfortunately I no longer have full permissions to edit the Wiki, they seem to have gotten lost in internet space somewhere.

Well, they are actually… I have a scheme that loads my custom workspace on this machine that has 7 or 8 custom display modes, plus mods to the standard ones. I have a second scheme that loads the default workspace, that one only has the standard modes and they are unmodified.

Thanks Pascal. I was really hoping the method of maintaining colors was still as easy as exporting and imoprting an .ini file.

Thanks CAD CAM CNC. However, we plan on using the custom UI on multiple computers, and the method of creating and using schemes will be more than us creating a simple template with some colors. It looks like we may need to rethink our Rhino 8 layout.

Hello- you can, it is just not included in the Window layouts - use OptionsExport and on OptionsImport select ‘Appearance’ to import.

I have now revised this page, let me know if the info is clear and if anything needs to be added/removed/modified.

Hi @pascal,
I’m having the same issue as @MBasmajian. When I export an .ini file from a computer with custom colors and then import it onto another, only the colors inside the viewports and the command bar change. All of the toolbars and menus stay default white.

This is the desired colors for the custom interface. I export the .ini file from here.
Rhino 8 New Interface.ini (180.2 KB)

When I import the .ini file onto another computer, I get this result.

How can I get the rest of the colors to properly export and import without using Schemes?

(Schemes are very cool, @Helvetosaur, and I use them personally, but the setup is a little too technical for most of our brand new students).

Hi Mike - what it looks like to me is, OptionsExport needs to be goosed to grab all the extra color stuff that has been added in V8. I’ll ask…
@MikeM so, in Options > Appearance on the starting setup, your ‘Colors’ is set to ‘Custom’, correct?

Can you send a screenshot of that whole page?

What’s the easy way for me to help a colleague get their Rhino to look the same on multiple computers?

When using one computer at a time at different locations of course.

Another way of looking at this, which might be more common, would be:
How does one user make it easy for another user, to open a file they send, and for it to appear with the same workspace and display modes, file options etc.?

:face_with_monocle:  :thought_balloon:

Idk, still sounds complicated. Maybe R9 will make it easy someday…

Yes, I’ve got it set to “Custom”. Here is a screenshot from the “source” computer with the desired UI colors.

And here is a screenshot from the “destination” pc after I imported the .ini file.

Thanks!

The page I edited covers Schemes and not settings transfers although for completeness and the fact that it uses the same files, there is also some mention of the second. If you want the settings transfer page it is here: Transferring Personalized Settings [McNeel Wiki]

Short answer (which you know already): you can’t. This stuff is not contained in and thus not transferred via a normal Rhino 3dm file (currently).

Dunno, making a copy of a file and using it to replace another one is complicated?

In any case, that’s what we got now.

Hey @pascal I haven’t seen any movement on this in a while. Being able to share .ini files would make a BIG difference.

Is there a bug tracker for this request?

Thanks!

Hi Mike - probably not - thank you for the reminder. I’ll get something going. My guess is this will get tuned up, assuming it is possible, for 8.1 +
