I’m noticing a strange behavior with Rhino 8: when I have two instances of Rhino 8 open, then I go to Chrome to do stuff, then all instances of Rhino 8 suddenly want to close and the popup asks “Save changes to xxxxxx.3dm? Yes / No” with no option to cancel.
Hi Derek,
That’s unusual. I typically have several Rhino instances open and a variety of chrome instances as well, with not issues.
Please type SystemInfo in your Rhino command line and post the results.
I just had it happen again this morning:
- For about an hour I’ve been modeling a Holosun red dot in Rhino 8
- I just opened a second Rhino 8 instance to grab a small part from a related project
- I copied the part in the second instance then pasted it in the first instance
- As soon as I pasted the part into the first instance, the second instance just straight up closed by itself in the background, and the first instance got the popup message “Save changes to xxxxxx.3dm? Yes / No” with no option to cancel.

Please disable the third party plugin via the Document Properties>Plugins dialog and see if that resolves the issue.
I’ve got that plugin disabled now and will report back it I see it happen again.
Had this happen again this evening.
- Been working for about an hour on a project
- Launched a second instance of Rhino 8
- On its splash screen I picked the recent project to open
- That second instance then instantly closed on its own
- Now in the first RH8 instance I see the "Save changes to xxxxxx.3dm? Yes / No” with no option to cancel:
Hi Derek, Is this with the RhinoCAM 2022 for R7 disabled? How is that licensed?
Mecsoft has their own licensing system for RhinoCAM. Normally it’s also an online license. If for some reason a license is not found, it just opens in demo mode. I have never seen it force a closure of Rhino.
However, only RhinoCAM 2023 is “certified” for Rhino V8. People have reported that RC 2021 and 2022 run OK in it though.
Correct, I currently have both RhinoCAM 2022 and RhinoArt1FileExporter plugins disabled in both Rhino 7 and 8.
As for licensing I have it attached to this specific computer ID. I know they also have a network license, but I’ve never messed around with that.
Just had this happen again to me. I had Rhino 8 open and did some work for about 15mins, saved it, opened a second instance of Rhino 8 because I wanted to copy something over to it. In the second instance I duplicated a layer, renamed it, and as soon as I hit enter the dreaded "Save changes to xxxxxx.3dm? Yes / No” popped up.
However, now because of this thread: Rhino 8 - Notification Popup - #3 by Derek_Heming I’m realizing this entire thing is likely caused by some kind of licensing issue. For some reason my Rhino 8 license becomes invalid and that forces all instances of Rhino 8 to close.
I can’t click on anything else due to the Popup of Doom, but notice how my notifications tab has the red icon:
This morning I opened Rhino 8, worked for about 5 mins, and when I opened a second instance of Rhino 8 I saw this in the notifications:
As soon as I hit the Print Screen key all instances of Rhino 8 closed at the same time. I’ve been using Rhino for 7 years now and have never had a single issue with the licenses in any way. Now I’m having problems every single day. Should I just move my licenses to my local machine?
Had the same problem again this morning so I decided to remove my licenses for 7 and 8 from the Zoo Cloud and go with the Lock to Single Computer option instead. It took me a while to figure out how to do that, but finding this page showed the way: https://www.rhino3d.com/features/administration/select-licensing-method/#commercial#lock-to-single-computer
Now everything works flawlessly! No more Notification popups at all in either 7 or 8, and no more forced closing nor fear of losing work if I don’t remember to save before opening another instance of 7 or 8. Cloud Zoo just has some fundamental problem with my MiFi internet out here in the countryside I guess, but Lock to Single Computer solves this problem for me.
The only disadvantage will be if you want to use your license on more than one computer - i.e. sometimes on your desktop and sometimes on your laptop (not both at the same time).
This is true, but I only have one computer so it’s well worth it to avoid the cluster of problems.
Hi @Derek_Heming ,
First of all sorry about your troubles. I’ve just come back from a long vacation and was told about this issue.
Is there anything special about your PC? Is it a VM? Is Windows running in some special mode that’s different from an off-the-shelf PC? All I could tell is our licensing system believed you changed PCs over 50 times (which obviously is clearly not the case). I’m just trying to figure out why.
Hey @Andrés Jacobo
Oh wow, so something weird is definitely going on then. My PC is just a normal MSI gaming laptop running Windows 10 Home. As far as I can tell all these problems started as soon as I bought and installed the Rhino 8 upgrade from 7. What can I do to help with diagnosing what’s going on?
I’d like to confirm the following:
- Since V7, you’ve used Cloud Zoo, and when running V7, you never had this licensing issue happen.
- Since V8, the issue started happening.
Correct?
Yes, that is correct.
Was there ever an update regarding this? The exact same thing is happening to me. I downloaded an evaluation version of rhino 8 before purchasing the license so I thought that might be the issue, but that doesn’t seem to be the issue here so I’m second guessing that theory. I’m currently unable to run simultaneous instances of rhino which is inconvenient though I suppose I’m saving more often so atleast there’s that.
