Rhino 8 best link to videos on getting familiar with

Hi, V5
about to buy V8, as a few weeks left. No chance to trial it as yet. and anyway V7 no use and I know V8 has some new goodies of use and fixes on V7. Very much hope the dims problem of 5 into 7 is solved.

I wish to do the right thing and run through a few learning tutorials.

I dont want those aimed at a complete newbie, though we all develop bad habits, as I dont have time to start over.

I want a structured intro to V8.

Changes explained, etc.

I dont want to be told see what folk on youtube have done, as they dive into chapter 11 assuming one has read chapters 1 to 10 ! or are badly spoken, or a language/accent I cant follow easily.

When with V4 we had a CD and it played ‘well created’ screen captured videos of the commands.
Then V5 had a usb stick…I keep losing the small thing, its here somewhere !

I asked the source of my V8 and was told we do a paid course. I cant afford that , or to contact or look at McNeel the source of Rhino,

hence this post.

When I had V4 I worked my way through the two volumes spiral bound that came with it or I had printed off.
folowing downloaded models etc, excellent and made sure I understood all before turning the page.

Such for intermediate users would be useful for V8.

Cheers

Steve

hi Steve, maybe this is a good start. It’s not all video’s though but it might help you to get an idea what has changed and been added.

This document breaks down the newest features in work areas: Rhino - New in Rhino 8

It is what I use to understand all the improvements. Each feature has some additional links that can be explored and some example files when possible.

Generally the largest changes are at the top.

Combined with some of the videos that @Gijs shows that is some of the best we have.

have you checked out our Youtube page? If you have not updated since v5… I’d go thru all the v7 video sfirst, then jump into thew v8 videos as they land-

Hi,
V8 refresher and new videos.

I am yearning for the well captured Snagit made screen resolution videos that came with V4, like looking at my own PC screen !
It showed each command without any waffle, and each vid was 5 mins or less.
There was an index and chapters, one could look up any command and see it done with proper english being spoken (a tricky to follow accent or non trained tutor type speech does my head in and I can’t follow it), straight to the point.
Not a 1 hour vid with all sorts going on and wsomewhere in it is the command you want to see.

It got me up and running FAST in V4
Youtube will not have the chapter list.

IT IS PEPERRED WITH ADVERTS MESSING UP A PROPER LEARNING SESSION, 1 MINUTE GAPS THROUGHOUT., I PERSONALLY EXIT VIDEOS WHEN THEY HAPPEN. HATE HATE HATE ADVERTS. SCUM OF LIFE !

I have clicked the youtube link and see actual items lasting for ages, as feared.
U want to see a certain command or command set such as transforms being usd, and nothing more, when building afainst the clock there sint a 1 hr lets watch a video chance.

How do I look up a chapter listing for it and see what other items are in that section ?

It wont be all done by one ‘author’,
It was a video that was part and parcel of the purchase, AND I MISS IT.
Came in a CD case.

wish I could find the usb stick I had with V5 or V7…can that be downloaded ?

Such tutorials are everything. They simply showed what the command did.

I also want a follow along with downloaded models, or those on the stick.

I also want to understand rendering, and materials, making something look rusty, and how to make actual bricks to lay onto an actual architectural model, as I need to recreate an actual item with the bricks it uses, not found in any library. and use D5. so wish to understand D5 and what to make in D5 and what to make in Rhino and what to make in Phtoshop.

and to understand topography and if to do it in rhino or D5.

Love learning.

Not sure youtube replaces the dedicated aimed at users CD then stick.

and can that stick be downloaded ?

Steve

You’re not alone. People are actually using the ads for profit, and not from the ad revenue but rather to offer customers a way around the ads. The people responsible for these advertisements really need to question their tactics: Does annoying potential customers help them sell more? I think the answer will be a resounding NO soon. I’m already boycotting anything I see on my Amazon Prime video. And the YouTube ads I see… I don’t think any of it is of real value.

I wont watch any TV channels wiith ads, record the progs then play them back and FFWd the ads, !
would love those adverts placers to see this, would really piss them off !
so Rhino with ads, when trying to learn something, NO !

I want that usb stick set of vids.

or a dedicated Rhino set without ads.

Just where ae those chapters and sections tuts each a minute to 5 mins at most long ?

When I want to see the bend tool in use I dont want to play through 1 hout of making a watering can.

Steve

you do know about the help files in rhino yes?

type bend in the command line, hit enter then hit f1 and the help for bend will pop up…

works for any tool or command in Rhino.

I’m always shocked how few people use this resource built into the program.

we also have a vimeo page that does not have any inline advertising.

Hi,
yes used to refer them in V5 just as a mind prompt, but no where near as nice as an entire PC screen and all the menus and buttons the tutor was going to. and the sheer size to see whats happening.
when I got V4 it impressed me so much, two volumes to read through and the cd videos. and the help vids,
then in V5 those gave erros, just tried again, ERROR.
so need the mini vids for each command, and lost to me in v5.

so I am after those CD then on a stick vids again, as I miss them.

there were chapters and sections, .

You say vimeo, are these are there now ? is that so, I just dont want how to make a shoe just to find the bit about use of bend tool somewhere in a 1hr video. and the narrator must speak DECENT ENGLISH !

Steve

v4 used flash for the help stuff… Flash is no longer an option so html is where we are now.

using f1 will be the fastest most direct way to get help on a specific feature.

Progress they call it !
I was drawing animated clickable maps and crash scenarios in flash at work, then we had to draw maps with just code, as flash was no more, impossible, so I exited stage left !

the full screen vids were gorgeous.
now there is

and thats actual quality.

I must find that usb stick.
is it not downloadable ?

Steve

And to make explicit what I imagine is implied; by utilizing the f1 key for new / relatively new commands to me, it is for me, a very efficient way to learn. Type f1 say five times week and on average 5 minutes of reading in help section each time. An 80% efficiency for that 25 minutes however one might construct this measure. A memory trace from long ago wants to say the human body is metabolically around 60% efficient.
