Hi Guys,
Rhino 7 appears to be unable to read OpenType Font Variations, meaning if a font family is installed, it’s only possible to target Bold, Regular, and Italicized font styles, and not any other weights.
For Example:

This is the entire available catalog of Pill Gothic that Rhino 7 shows as available.
The windows Fonts application shows how the family has several “variable types” within each weight:

Illustrator correctly reads the font family and it’s variable types:

Unfortunately, the combination of cloud type licensing and conversion of existing font families to new standards is making this problem unavoidable, despite our best efforts to keep things simple.
Would it be possible to fix this issue, or should we assume that Rhino will not work with OTF variable type for the foreseeable future?
Thanks for your help!

that bug persists now for many years, because mcneel somehow changed how fonts work and made a huge mess. i have been complaining to and fro forever about it in one or two of my own topics where i proactively tried to motivate developers to have a look and nobody ever acknowledge the issue accordingly. that is one of the topics which infuriated me to say the least because i had to run after any hint i could find related to this issue while others played dumb and did not understand the problem.
i believe the issue lies deeper than just OTF etc. but i have not understood what is causing the actual problem and nobody ever revealed details.

Hi @encephalon,
Yes, I saw your thread, I reintroduced the topic to see if this was going to be addressed and to focus the conversation.
As far as the nature of the issue, I suspect it’s because everyone else has changed how fonts work. OTC, TTF, or whatever, and McNeel just hasn’t caught up. I have old copies and new copies of several font families. The old ones work just fine, the new ones are the busted ones.
Regardless, I’m not interested in diagnosing it myself. I just want to know if this is on their radar.
