Rhino 7 open and pc shutdown

Hi, I think there are related posts about this issue but I can´t find a solution. My problem is that when I launch Rhino 7 my pc automatically shuts down. It doesn’t happen with Rhino 7 safe mode or Rhino 6. I copy the system info. I just can use this under Rhino 7 safe mode.

Is the SystemInfo you posted from Rhino 7 in safe mode?

Someone will probably suggest you should update the video driver to the latest driver from NVidia
which can be found at Download Drivers | NVIDIA That may not solve the problem but updating the drive eliminates one possibility.

You might try uninstalling and reinstalling Rhino, or repairing the installation.

Also there has been a Windows 10 update released since the version on your system.

Your PC shuts down??? Like actually shuts off? Something is seriously awry there. Make sure your video drivers are up to date, make sure Windows is up to date, make sure your BIOS is up to date? Make sure your video card has sufficient power connections plugged in?

What resolutions are you monitors at? 6GB of GPU RAM is not really enough for running this on multiple 4K screens…not that it should cause your computer to shut down.

Apart from the driver and power checks suggested also ensure there is adequate cooling. Clean out all your fans and openings from dust. If you have had your machine already for some time, and especially if it sits on the floor, and you haven’t cleaned it out before then now is a good time. CPU fan, GPU fan(s), case fans, PSU fan.

Regarding the power cabling check, apart from that also ensure your PSU can provide the amount of power needed when your machine is fully active.

If these don’t help maybe also check if you have any gaming-related tools enabled:

  • discord (desktop app)
  • shadowplay
  • geforce experience
  • curseforge (or similar)
  • anything else that provides overlays and OSD (on-screen displays), like Sonic Sound Studio, other Nahimic products, etc.

Disable this before starting Rhino and see if that helps.

Thanks to all of you guys for the replays. The weird thing is that just happens with Rhino7. I render with 3dmax and Corona and works well, and there is no problem with Rhino 6. The crash just happens with Rhino 7. I´m gonna check if I have some products that provide OSD to disable.

I changed with the NVIDIA control panel the Surround configuration. Now it´s active. I use two monitors and now it looks like the problem is solved. I´ll update related issues so if someone has a similar problem can use this thread.

After sending the pc to check the components ( it is a new machine) I have the same problem. After more or less 20 minutes of working on rhino, the computer shut down. I copy the system into to see if somebody can help.

Perhaps it can be useful to create a memory dump before your machine goes down. The following instructions are generally used to diagnose a hanging Rhino, but in this case I’d like to have a look at the process information of the otherwise running fine Rhino. Just start Rhino and follow the instructions over at

https://wiki.mcneel.com/rhino/manual_rhino_dmp_windows

but with last step use the following link to upload the memory dump: rhino3d.com/upload?to=nathan@mcneel.com . That way I’ll get the memory dump directly and I’ll be able to have a peak at the process configuration.

Don’t forget to shut down Rhino right after you create the memory dump, so your machine stays up and running…

Thanks a lot Nathan. I already upload the file.

@adejanon thank you. I have started downloading it and will investigate soon.

addendum:

@adejanon I’ve investigated the dump you sent, there was nothing here that stood out to me as a potential cause for this.

The part where you say

would sound to me like an overheating issue.

You could install a tool like MSI Afterburner and have it open so that you can follow the CPU and GPU temperatures and see if these climb much, and to what before your machine shuts down.

Take note of especially the CPU temperature and after that check what the BIOS setting is for temperature threshold where the machine may automatically shut down to prevent hardware problems.

For instance right now my CPU temps look like this

Thanks, Natan I´m gonna install what you told me. The weird thing is that just happens with Rhino. I render with Corona and Lumion and works fine. I´ll be checking the temperature with Rhino and other softwares.

I would assume heat trouble with such software as well indeed. I have currently no useful idea of what the cause could be. So hopefully we can troubleshoot the issue this way.

One think that comes to mind from your crashdump is: could you try ensuring Rhino is whitelisted in your anti-virus software you’re using?
