Rhino 7 Evaluation edition crash when opening files

My Rhino (free trial edition) has started crashing when I open a file. It has been working fine up to now but has only started doing this. It allows me to open the program, but when opening up a file it freezes and crashes the whole PC. I have uninstalled and re-installed the program from the McNeel website (so i assume the latest version), and have opened in safe mode as some of the fourms here have mentioned, however i would like to be able to use all of the features which i cannot do from safe mode.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

It seems like there is something in the latest AMD 550 graphics drivers that are causing this problem. Open Rhino and run the “Options” command. On the tree on the left go to View->OpenGL and uncheck “GPU Tessellation”.

Hi Steve,

This seemed to work, thank you very much!!
I was just wondering if you maybe know is this a temporary fix or will a permanent solution come in a further update? and what does unchecking that box do in regards to performance?

Thanks again,
Darragh.

Hi Darragh -

We can’t fix bugs in an application that is written by AMD. This does, however, affect quite a few of our users, and, if AMD is not able or willing to fix this on their side, we will consider automatically disabling GPU tessellation on their hardware. I suspect that this has some impact on display performance but unless you have larger amounts of curves and displayed edges in your viewports, you might not feel the difference.

I was experiencing the same issue with the Commercial license of Rhino 7 on my computer with Radeon ™ Pro WX 5100 Graphics (AMD), and disabling GPU tessellation seems to resolved the issue for me as well!

My other computer with an Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 (Intel) primary display + NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M (NVidia) primary OpenGL was unaffected and remains working just fine with GPU tessellation enabled.

I have the same issue with Nvidia Card. Many Files crash after trying to open them. I have re-installed Rhino and Vray. I have unchecked the Tesselation but still cannot open the files. In another PC the files open but lost all the paths of the materials.

Please Help!
