Rhino 7.8.21196.05002, 2021-07-15 crashing, Grasshopper not loading

just updated to the latest available Rhino 7.5 for Mac and Grasshopper does not start because of external file loading error

In addition, trying to open Options dialog in Rhino crashes Rhino.
Important questions:

  • how can I download a previous version of Rhino 7 to continue working on my drawings?
  • is this the right place to report this kind of fundamental errors?

Hi Thomas -

This is the right place, yes. More often than not, the first thing we need from you is the SystemInfo data. Could you please run the Rhino SystemInfo command and copy-paste the result here?

Is that in any way related to using Grasshopper or does that also happen when you reboot your machine, run Rhino and open the Options dialog?

The good thing with the way it works on macOS is that you don’t have to uninstall and reinstall different versions - you can always have several versions available from, e.g., you desktop. While downgrading to a previous version might get you on the road again, if we don’t get the information we need to be able to fix an issue, you’ll be stuck on a depreciated version indefinitely…
All that said, Rhino 7.4 is here: https://files.mcneel.com/rhino/7/mac/releases/rhino_7.4.21078.01002.dmg

Hi Wim

thanks for the download link to the 7.4 version

There seem to be two separate issues, opening Options dialog and starting Grasshopper.

  • reboot Mac
  • open Rhino, new drawing
  • open Options
  • Rhino crashes

Attached the Systeminfo.

Thanks for that information, Thomas.
Can you confirm that this all works fine again when you run 7.4?

yes, 7.4 works as expected.

Hi Wim

should the issue be fixed in 7.6? Grasshopper is still not loading

Thomas

I have renamed the Topic to 7.8.21196.05002, 2021-07-15 crashing since the issue still exists. This really sucks. I AM A PAYING USER OF RHINO AND AM NOT ABLE TO USE GRASSHOPPER WITH THE LATEST RELEASES, I AM STUCK WITH 7.4
PLEASE ADVISE HOW TO DEBUG THIS FILE LOAD ERROR.

Hi @thomasd This may be connected to some Grasshopper add-ons/plugins on your computer. Try using the command GrasshopperLoadOneByOne and you’ll get asked about loading each part of GH. Say No to any additional GH plugins you know you’ve added for the first try. Any luck?

You can also use the GrasshopperFolders command to open the components directory to remove any problem add-ons or use the PackageManager command to uninstall them.

image means GH is loading something.

So I’d definitely say some plugin causes this. And I don’t think GH itself is using System.Memory.

did the trick. Thanks for your advice.

Nevertheless, would be great if the error message contained the name of the file causing the error.

I’m glad that helped… which GH plugin was the issue?

don’t know exactly which one. I uninstalled a whole bunch of less important plugins at once, kept just the ones I regularly use.

Okay thanks, if you notice which one it was in the future please let us know and we can make sure that plugin developer is aware of the issue to try and reproduce it. Glad you’re up and running.

thank you! had the same issue, this worked for me too
