I had a need to orient the gumball to something other than the object itself, so I could move groups of objects normal to a reference object. Pascal worked up a macro for me which lets one pre-select objects, then pick a face to set the C-plane to, sets the gumball to that C-plane and lets one move those objects. I think it does what you need. Video Here
I think the fillet in Rhino are very weak compared to many other CAD (not only those solid/parametric, but also NURBS type).
Compared to earlier versions of Rhino, there is an improvement, but not enough, well MOI, SolidThinking, and others, do better!
I believe that you can not innovate and introduce new if not resolved known issues in this type.
If you do not change strategy to McNeel we will meet with an old year CAD: CAD others are light years ahead!
SubD not enough to innovate, by themselves are of little use when a simple fillet fails to work well.
When Rhino Fillets fail, I revert to manually building them. It would be helpful when fillet fails, it would leave a BiRail curve on the surface. This would remove one step from the manual build method.
Hi Dave - are you referring to FilletEdge or FilletSrf or both? Hopefully between the two you can make pretty much any fillet without needing a Sweep2 - can you post or send me an example?
The case that write into PDF is not difficult to fix, maybe the developers have not worked enough on this kind of situations.
is a fairly simple case, we are not talking to perform fillet as Catia or Solidworks.
This kind of situation had to be arranged already in rhino 5 … Too much time is being lost, competitors do much better, even MOI.
Rhino is a great software, however, it surprised me a little.
A Cad NURBS: surface modeler, but possesses a small number of tools to generate complex surfaces. Even certain parametric modelers have many more tools surfaces.
Apart from the lack of a “multisweep” and a “Multiblend”, in my opinion, essential to speed up the creation of complex shapes and well filleted, also lacks a tool for creating forms Y (see image).
To do this we must create everything by hand, and then connect the booms. For two booms is easy, but if these are manifold? the work becomes too laborious!
The tools in Rhino surfaces should be the best, in quality and quantity. This is a surface modeler, not of solid …
Practically, the tools to generate surfaces remain as they are to those found in early versions (enhanced yes, but always the same).
Read my words as a starting point for future versions, and not as a negative criticism. THANKS.
@davide76 (and anyone else interessed) can you show us the result of your curves in another app that can run them the way you are describing?..
I would like to see the result of that, I’m really curious to see how other apps would work those situations…
Diegodx, unfortunately I can not find more videos related to CAD using these tools, I believe it was one of these UGS NX.
These days I searched the internet but I have not found these videos.
I can tell you that the last example has been done with a few clicks with UGS NX, I’m sure.
I got to see the wip Rhino 6.
I saw only use a few commands, such as: “Extend surface”, “edge blend”, “Sweep1” and “blend surface”.
I noticed some improvement, but nothing exceptional compared to V5.
The controls are pretty much the same as the previous version (apart from a better organization and a few more options). A little disappointed in this way!
The extend command surface works much better, but lacks an option that allows to keep the parts (the original and the extended) separated from or combined, in such a way as to visually understand the extension amplitude compared to the original surface. And then you can not extend more than one edge (command a little limited, one edge at a time …).
The solution for fillet/blend edge “partial type” gives good results on straight volumes, but when there are curved surfaces, it happens some anomalies (as shown): to solve! Apart from that, the fillet are always those little work best but nothing shocking!
When you run a Sweep1 preview of the result does not appear immediately, you need to work on one of the options, freeform, Roadlike … otherwise the sweep is not immediately revealed as operation performed … maybe you will be a bug?
Straight lines and curves with setting 1 pixel (in options), are too thick compared to the V5 and anti-aliasing is not the best.
I was expecting something better … upgrade from V5 to V6 for a few more options seems exaggerated! Have many years of development and important innovations I have not seen much, or am I wrong?
They say it does not work the preview in the Rhino 6, route: option, display modes, shaded, custom material, customize, environment … does not update the preview thumbnail map or changing or increasing or decreasing the percentage. It’s a Bug!
