Rhino 5 deleted everything on my Rhino 7 file

I had a file that I worked on in Mac Rhino 7 [Version 7 (7.3.21039.11202, 2021-02-08)] that I saved on my external hard drive. I opened it on another computer which only had Rhino 5. I got an error message that the file was from a newer version, and the file that opened was missing my drawing. Within a few seconds it autosaved this blank version of the file. I closed it after hitting ‘don’t save’.

Then I tried to open the file in Rhino 7 and it was still a blank file. I tried to revert it to the earlier saved version, and now I get the error message that the file “is not a Rhino m_archive”, and then Rhino just crashes.

I worked on this file for 2 weeks, and there are absolutely no files in the Autosave file in the ~/Library folder, so now I am extremely disappointed in Rhino.

That’s not how opening files in an incompatible version of Rhino, or autosave, works, so something else happened.

Well, if it was Windows, I would say that was 100% the case. However, on the Mac side with how saving and Versions actually works, I’m not so sure… In any case there have been a few reports here of people on the Mac side that have lost files due to some saving snafu.

That’s a heavy loss.
Don’t you have a Time machine backup? if you do, you should be able to get the file from an earlier back up…
