Is there a button to press to reply to the author of a post with a private mail - and include the post in question? All I found is the new private mail buttons (nothing filled in) or the public reply button. Did I miss something?

Yes, use the flag action under the post, and in the flags you should see
Notify Helvetosaur
This post contains something I want to talk to this person directly and privately about.
That will let you send a quick PM to the author of the post, right there by typing in the box.
