Referencing CAD Links crash Revit

Hello,
I’ve encountered an issue where Revit starts crashing after some time when I begin drawing or selecting objects in the Rhino viewport. After spending a few hours checking whether the problem was caused by my script or any referenced elements, I identified the cause.

Whenever I reference a linked .dwg file and then draw a line or make changes, switch viewports, or perform mouse clicks, Rhino freezes and Revit crashes.

I’m not ruling out other factors that might contribute to this problem, but I’ve tried to reproduce the situation with as few external influences as possible.

I believe this was fixed in1.32, are you using the latest RiR?

After watching your video this looks like something different.

Getting complete about info/System is a good start. Help Us Help You - Rhino.Inside.Revit Edition - #5 by Japhy

We will also want to isolate RiR from 3rd party Revit addins for troubleshooting.

If still not successful we need to look at 3rd party GH plugins (GrasshopperLoadOneByOne command line start of gh)

@Japhy yes I do.

In addition, I must point out that I’ve just noticed this crash occurs with standard generic models, not only with DWG links. I just can’t replicate it yet to record the situation, it’s so random.

Hello @Japhy.

I’m writing down my workflow to help replicate the situation:

  1. I isolated Revit as you suggested and deleted the Grasshopper plugins from the Libraries folder.
  2. Next, I created a new Revit model and linked just one CAD file.
  3. I opened Grasshopper and, using the graphical element parameter, referenced the linked geometry.
  4. After pressing a few times in the Rhino viewport, Revit crashed.

Error Report:

I don’t have a minidump file, as mentioned in the “Help Us Help You” topic, but I do have another dump file (“journal”) and the corresponding TXT file. I’ve attached the files below.
I’d be grateful if you could help me find the reason for this error, because I’m currently unable to use Rhino.Inside in this situation.

error_report.zip (1.9 MB)

I managed to replicate the Revit crash in an almost original environment. Only a few basic Grasshopper plugins are active, but I couldn’t delete them because they weren’t in the Libraries folder. However, I don’t think they are the cause of the problem.
You can skip the video from 1:29 to 2:00 — I was attaching my reference file on the second screen

P.S.

Update:

I thought that something might be wrong with my linked files because they use actual geographical coordinates. So I created a basic AutoCAD DWG file near the origin and linked it to Revit, but the result is the same.

Here is what i am running. Thanks for the video, i haven’t been able to repeat.

You have a number of GH plugins that we should temporarily remove for troubleshooting.

One way is to open GH via the Rhino command line with GrasshopperLoadOneByOne

Oh I see you have version 1.35, while version shared on rhino3d website is 1.32.9327.20567, so I’am running latest release.

Regarding running command GrasshopperLoadOneByOne and launching Revit in non-addons mode - crashing again :frowning: Here my first attempt and immediate crash:

You are pretty up to date, i don’t think this is RiR version issue. What is your exact Revit version?

Please run Systeminfo in Rhino and post the results as well. Thanks

I’m running Revit version 2023.1 and Rhino 7.

Here is SystemInfo result:

These crashes are occurring while in a remote desktop environment?

There are a number of updates to Revit 2023.1

Not only on remote desktop @Japhy. I just checked SystemInfo with remote desktop because I’m not at the office. However I checked both at pc and remotely, and this crash occured. If it makes any difference, I can send SystemInfo report directly from the PC tomorrow.

Thanks, i figured as much but needed clarification.

I also checked Revit build version and it’s 2023 1.6, while 1.8 is the latest. I’ll ask my IT to update.

Good morning @Japhy

After a few days I recieved from IT an update of Revit 2023 to 1.8 build and RIR to 1.33 version.

Unfortunately this didn’t solve the problem. Does any other things come to your mind, what can cause this issue?
