Readability of icons

Hello,

I think you could change the color of some icons, because the white lines on a light gray background are almost invisible.
I just changed some icons on Rhino8 and you can see that it is easier to know what you are clicking on.

I changed the perpendicular curves to lines but the principle remains the same, not having white lines on an almost white background.

Maybe this could be done as an alternative color palette for the icons, but in my opinion the default icons must use white elements. Personally I use a bit darker gray background for the icons than yours, hence the white is easy to recognize. But I get the idea and vote for adding an alternative set of icons for the people who use nearly white background.

White elements could be still used in this case, by adding some minor dark gray shadow or outline around them.

Yes, you’re probably right. It all depends on the background color of the interface.
When it comes to Rhino’s default icons and colors, I spend my time hovering over each button to change the background color and see if I’m clicking where I want.
(In the end, it comes down to changing the default background color).

I use the background colour seen in the screen-shot: RGB 190, 190, 190. The white elements inside the icons boost the contrast and accentuate to the input geometry, hence they are much easier to read than the icons with low contrast and no accents.

Your background colour is very light blue: RGB 233, 235, 239.

We agree. A set of icons (optional or not) that match the default Rhino theme would be helpful.

yes, this is the default color of Rhino, since version 5 I only know this one.
I like the light color but I’ll try changing it, it will probably go faster…

I just checked the background colour of Rhino 8. It’s same as yours. In my opinion, this is a very inappropriate background colour and must be changed to something darker. I recommend you to try RGB 190, 190, 190. The user experience is much better that way.

If this is too dark for you, you can try RGB 210, 210, 210 or RGB 220, 220, 220.

We have this issue logged here, and I just moved it up, lets see if we can make the lines show up better.

The link does not work.

Now it does work.

Personally I prefer RGB 190, 190, 190, but a good compromise for those who want a brighter background is to set the RGV values to 205, 205, 205.

Obviously, those who prefer a nearly white background will need to use a different set of icons where the white elements are replaced with some darker colour.

Judging from some old video on YouTube, seems like Rhino 5 used RGB 209, 209, 209.

not exactly the color was always very light but Rhino 5 used a gradient which made it a tiny bit darker
in order Rhino 5 6 7 and 8

I meant this particular video, which was the 1st result from Google search. Seems like the modeler modified the background, because the default one was too light for him, too.

VisualCAD uses some icons taken from Rhino and changed the colours to a darker tone, in order to make them easier to read on their light background:

Wile we wait for a upgrade, I have modified a few of the standard icons on my toolbars.

Thank you @Ja-Ka , that’s nice!

Sweet!
Many thanks.

Are there any other custom icons uploaded here that you know of?

Hi VicNi,
You can download the Rhino icons in different sizes here: Rhino Toolbar Images [McNeel Wiki]
Then you can just tweak them to your liking in Photoshop. Import them via png in R7 and then to R8. If you want more crisp icons; convert them to svg first, and then use them directly in R8/9.

Different users probably have put their creative twist on many of the icons, but I am not aware of any tread were users have uploded them like share your custom viewport mods#.

One other tip in case you are not aware of it:
In Windows Explorer you dont see svg by default, and it looks something like this:

But you rather want to see something like this:

Then this program is for you:

Another tip is, if you don’t want to spend time learning inkscape or similar for svg editing, you can use a program called Vector Magic. Then it is just a push of a button to convert from png to svg.
