I’ve been using Rhino since Rhino 3, first on PC and then on mac for a few years now. Mac version always ended up slightly slower because of added clicks to do simple things like confirming most commands for example…that takes 1 right click on PC…
but it’s ok because that the environment I’m working in now, and up to now every single version was worth the upgrade.
I use it every day for several hours, so here is my honest feedback on trying to use rhino 8, release version for the first time today, and then 8.2 candidate hopping it would fix all of the weird stuff , things got weird super quick and that makes me not want to use it by priority order :
The software entire window disappears randomly, I know it seems to be a bug experienced by many, but if you are customizing your popup menu, it genuinely takes forever because the entire software will randomly disappears and get back to mac desktop. Will also happen when you are in a middle of a random command. seriously?
I use a lot of shortcuts, simple stuff like selecting the part, “mir” for mirror, then 0 and enter to mirror from symmetry axis depending on mouse direction… super fast… but not anymore, can’t seem to input 0 without going in the “start of mirror plane” input case (which used to be input case " Value" up to this version). seems like it’s nothing, but at the end of the day when you do it a 1000 times it’s really frustrating, especially when it’s always been working great up to today
after a while letting rhino 8 run in the background, few letters or commands shortcuts don’t even work anymore, have to close and re-open
software crashes completely when I open a Rhino 7 files and then apply an older material to a new surface, bam full crash.
menu UI, can’t seem to vertically stack stuff? so now I have to click on a sub icon to get to Osnap vs simply accessing them bellow, and then click on a sub icon to get back to the main icon tab (yes I still use some of it), same for layers and materials on the right, extra clicks are usually not what makes things simpler.
New modified icons just for the sake of it, I understand the appeal, but I don’t understand the result, R7 icons where pretty clear and super contrasty, this one, I guess I will just need to get used to it.
Anyway, I will try to give it a chance, but for actual work, Rhino 7 is super stable, fairly fast and doesn’t wast my time with random crashes.
There’s a lot to digest here. I can’t reproduce items 1-3, if you have a way to reproduce the issue reliably we can get them fixed quickly.
4- Can you send me the file you’re having issues with?
Hello!
Issue 1 still happen to me with latest release candidate (8.2.23333.09482, 2023-11-29):
click center button of your mouse, click on top right gray bar to stick the popup as a permanent menu.
Press command key and click drag an icon to copy it to the pop up menu. the disappear bug happens 90% of the time for me and get worst the longer I try. It also happen when I’m calling a command completly randomly. No issue on 7 or any other softwares.
Issue 2 : first try with latest release doesn’t even allow me to type “mir” (or any letters) to call a command, relaunched and now I can call the command but still can’t input 0 directly without having to click in the input case “start of mirror plane:”
Issue 3: is still there and happened the first time I launched the latest Release candidate version.
Issue 4: Same file, same surface doesn’t crash anymore with latest release candidate
Issue 5: Couldn’t get the tabs like you are showing with the previous release candidate, works with the latest: slide your tab close to the spot you want to and drop it where the blue square shows up
Installed latest release candidate Version 8 (8.3.23346.14002, 2023-12-12)
fixed with latest release candidate, at least couldn’t reproduce the issue with the pop up issue, it did disapear on me for 1 s when I selected “rendered” in the view options
Mirror > 0 > click works now without selecting the input section, but the plan in perspective is somewhat in the wrong orientation unless you click on 2 point perspective, then perspective again and then it works.
3)didn’t get to test that yet, will report tomorrow
Applied materials on same surfaces as before without crashing.
