Problems importing Adobe Illustrator files lately

Hi
I have some issues to import paths out of illustrator files lately. never had problems until a few days ago. Rhino seems to ignore some of the paths that are part of the illu-file… no idea why.

Had it with different AI-File Versions… use Rhino on a mac (version 8, latest updates installed)

Maybe paste your file that won’t correctly import, so forum users can see for themselves what you mean.

Can you send us an example that does not work?
What App is creating the AI files?

I can test them on our systems.

OK, for example if I try to import a QR-Code (that consists of Paths in adobe illustrator) into rhino, I save it as adobe illustrator file (.ai) and drag it into the window of an existing rhino 8 file. Then a popup apears asking me if i’d like to import it into the existing file or create a new one, I choose import. The result is seen in the screenshot. You can recreate it, taking any random qr code, paste it to illustrator, create path’s of it and then try to import into rhino…

If I export the exact same file as .eps from illustrator, it imports fine (so this can act as a workaround until the other import option works propperly again…)

edit:
it seems to have problems with exactly square paths! it imports a text (changed to path-text in illustrator) just fine - no squares there…
As soon as I draw squares, it seems to ignore these…
In the QR Code, all exactly square paths seemed to be ignored as well…

Works as it always did. Rhino 8 macOS. Illustrator 2025. New Rhino document. Imported.

Hi Elk -

Please post the .ai file.

The .ai file format is ancient. I would recommend to use .pdf instead.

I ran into this problem a few days ago. I was able to workaround by exporting the .ai file as .svg and all the illustrator elements came into Rhino. Yes, open .ai files is broken.

As I showed above, for me it works. Open paths. Closed paths. Lines. Curves. No problem.

Perhaps it is the older illustrator I use (2022)?
Seems to only concern squares. also, it does not repeatably behave that way… I was not able to recreate it every time… not sure what does actually cause the problem yet… will investigate further…

Uploaded a .ai file that doesn’t work…

test2.ai (1.4 MB)

As above, the file imports fine.

I see this:

missing paths within the code, square on the side is missing too.

Here is an .ai file. Objects in file are created with the text tool and then outlined in illustrator. Open resulting file in Rhino and there are missing objects.

Neal logo not official2.3dm (2.4 MB)

Neal logo not official2.ai (1.1 MB)

FYI, Both of the AI files provided are saved as PDF version 1.6 internally. That is shown in the file header. Rename these files with a PDF extension and they will open in Acrobat.

I can recreate the problem. We will take a closer look.
Where does this file come from?

Is it the hatch fill what is not correct in this case? But, the lines seem right?

I get this in Illustrator:

Rhino 6, 7, 8 and the WIP witht the curve areas that are missing with arrow:

Is there any Rhino that ever read this correctly?

Yes. I still have my old 5.5.5 Licence running (and funny enough it still runs on my mac!). There it opens perfectly fine with all geometries.
I also only had this problem lately (not sure if it only concerned the latest update or maybe the latest few…). I use Illustrator files quite regularely to import logos etc. and the problem didn’t occur for too long…

edit: perhaps an issue that only occurs since the mac os tahoe (26.2) upgrade?! I suppose the 5.5.5 version doesn’t run natively on my M1 mac?!

I will test it against the Mac versions too.

@Lagom - What version of Rhino was this read in? Can you get a detailed version number out of SystemInfo?

I am using Rhino Version 8 (8.23.25251.13002, 2025-09-08) on an Apple MacBook Pro M4 Max running macOS Sequoia 15.7.3 (24G419) and Illustrator 2025 (29.3.1). Hope that helps.

It does help, thank you. Using your information, the problem shows up in 8.27 Mac. 8.26 works like your 8.23. That should help us locate what changed.
