Printing Issue

Hi all,

I’ve been dealing with persistent printing issues over the past three months. As an architect, I rely heavily on Rhino’s Technical and Monochrome display modes for clean, precise output—modes that previously worked flawlessly for years.

The problem arises when printing PDFs from Layout views: the print preview dialog freezes with an endless progress wheel in certain files when using these display modes. Rhino support has confirmed the issue is specific to Technical and Monochrome, and recommended switching to raster mode. Unfortunately, raster output results in faint line weights and colors, and lacks the quality of vector printing.

Rhino support has been responsive and helpful throughout, but they’ve also acknowledged that a fix from the development team may not be forthcoming anytime soon.

My current workaround as suggested by Rhino support is using Rendered mode with extensive tweaks to the render settings, but it’s far from ideal.

Has anyone found a better solution or alternative display mode that closely mimics Technical or Monochrome? I’d appreciate any insights—thanks in advance!

I’m not able to provide any assistance, but anyone who can help you will need to know which version of Rhino you are using.

Hi Gerry -

I think your issue with the endless progress wheel was put on the list as RH-88151 (not publicly visible). Reviewing that report, I see nothing there about this being a regression from an earlier version of Rhino 8. Do you know in which version of Rhino 8 this started not working?

Here is the version I’m on

Rhino 8 SR20 2025-6-6 (Rhino 8, 8.20.25157.13001

Thank you!

Hi Gerry -

My question is not which version you are seeing this issue in.
Since you wrote that this previously worked flawlessly, I’m wondering if you recall which Rhino 8 version was working correctly.

Sorry, I do not. I keep updates/version current. It wasn’t a problem early in 2025 and I can say with a high degree of confidence that it was not a problem in Rhino 7. Thank you

Hi Gerry -

Vector printing of views in any of the technical display modes was not possible at all in Rhino 7, so I’m not sure what to make of that comment.

At any rate, does the TestToggleTechnicalVectorOutput command make any difference in your workflow now? It is a test command and needs to be entered completely on the command line. It forces Rhino 8 to behave the same way as Rhino 7 when printing views in technical display modes.
