Rhino crashes when printing vectorized PDF

Hello everyone,

My R8 crashes immediately when printing PDFs. As soon as I switch to vector output in the print options, the program crashes, regardless of the printer (adobePDF, rhinoPDF…).
For now I’ve been printing rasterized, but it is really inconvenient to have this output long term.
It would be nice to have at least the things from the layout vectorized.

I have a workflow with blocks, custom viewing modes and clipping sections, including respective section styles.
I usually print by layout sheet. The 3d geometry in the layout detail is cut by plane, with repective section style, instead of 2d linework, so I assume it’s not the easiest thing thing to handle for rhino…

Please, if someone has found a solution for this…

A couple things we can troubleshoot.

Let’s start by disabling the 3rd Party plugins (Vray) via File>Properties>Plugins

This will require a restart of Rhino.

The next thing to try is to disable GPU Tessellation in File>Properties>View>OpenGL , restart Rhino.

I do see a crash report that we can analyze today.

Thanks first of all!

sooo:
it does work for two view modes now: “monochrome” and “pen” print vectorized linework, but you don’t get any of the shaded textures, effects and shadows.
As soon as I switch back to rasterized, the effects appear again.
The other viewmodes still print rasterized layout details. Titleblocks on layout sheets stay vectorized.

Any idea how to circumvent this?

What did you change so far?

I disabled 3rd party plugins and the tesselation on the OpenGL.
In general no crashes anymore, which is great.

Now stays the issue with rasterized images with most viewmodes.

If you disable the clipping planes in the views does the rasterized work for you?

If you can’t post the model here you can upload privately here, please put a link to this thread in the comments

turned on and off the clipping plane. Nothing changed. When I’m on vector mode, all shading and effects dissapear on detail, except for the vectorized linework. Is this a feature?

Just uploaded the model to tech.

This issue should be fixed in the Service Release candidate.
You can change your Update frequency to Release Candidate and check for updates:

Hello Mary Ann,
Any idea when this will be released?
N

Hi @nsgma,
You should see sr11 become the public release by midweek, if nothing unexpected nothing holds it up.
You can get it now as the release candidate.

It would be best to know sooner rather than later is if it is fixed for you be testing with the release candidate.
Can you do that according to the instructions above?

Thanks,
Mary Ann Fugier.

Hello @mary
Sorry I only had time to check this today. I have the most recent SRC

The problem persists.
N

@nsgma could you share a file that causes this crash? If we can repeat it, we will get it fixed right away

Hi @nsgma,

I looked at the one crash dump you submitted - thanks for doing that. The report shows this:

Plug-ins:

  • AMDDenoiser.Windows (0.5.3.0)
  • Lands Design (6.1.1.9957)
  • NVIDIADenoiser.Windows (0.4.3.0)
  • SectionTools (Aug 13 2024 06:17:59)
  • Tibidabo (21.2.2.19205)

Can you disable these and see if the crash does away. From Rhino, select Tools > Options > Plug-in and sort on “Plug-ins that do not ship with Rhino”. Uncheck the box next to them and restart Rhino.

Also, can you run Rhino’s SystemInfo command and post the output?

Thanks,

– Dale

Hello Dale
After turning off the plug ins the problem persists.
N

Hi Dale,
I have identified that the issue occurs with a Detail in Technical display mode. It seems to have to do with the print menu preview.
When I change the technical displaymode to Wireframe, the preview appears and they the PDF is produced.
I tested also the Monochrome display mode and it similarly crashes.
N

HI @nsgma - can you run SystemInfo and point the results in a reply?

– Dale

Hi @dale
I still have this problem. any progress on this?
N

Hi Nuno -

Dale asked you twice for your SystemInfo command without a reply from you…
Other than that, I’m not seeing any recent crash reports from you. Please always send those in.
-wim

Hi @nsgma,

You never never answered my question…
