Precise units not showing

Hello Rhino people!

I have a question that probably has a simple solution and I can fix it when I use Solidworks but Rhino operates differently. It is the unit precision. Attached you will find a screenshot with my current units that I’m in: feet and inches. For ease, I have shown two dimensions: 96" (8ft) and then 95" (7ft - 11"). My problem: I wanted to reduce 96" down by 1/2" which would make the decimal 95.5" ( 7ft 11-1/2"). But this is not showing as is on Rhino.

Perhaps it is my display options? Perhaps it is precision options? I tried looking on youtube, but nothing. Let me know, I don’t care if they show up as a decimal or a fraction. I just care to see that the system is acknowledging the 1/2" that it seems to be ignoring as I reduce the 8ft to 7ft 11-1/2"

Oh and this also happens when I try to make a circle at 3/8" diameter. it automatically makes it 3/4"…I am not sure how to adjust this…

Does this make sense?

Thank you so much

Nina

It’s a little confusing what you want here but the dimensions are controlled by the dimension styles, the Units you’re showing there are the modeling units and basically unrelated.

So you scaled it down by 1/2", you think, but it’s showing it was scaled by 1"? How did you modify it?

Actually I THINK i figured it out…and yes you are correct. I have a planar surface here and I just wanted to reduce it by 1/2" and the modeling units as you say would show up reducing a full inch rather than the exact 1/2"…So what I did was i went on the “grid snap spacing” in properties reduced this to 0.02 ft rather than the standard rhino grid spacing at 0.1 ft which would have the grid spacing less precise. I needed to have this more precise as it snaps on the grid so that when the modeling dimensions show (in order to double check accuracy of size) I can see the exact fractional or decimal units if I reduce it by 0.5". Now at 0.02 grid spacing I can see dimensional accuracy to the 1/4" of an inch, rather than rounding up to the next inch.

Look at screenshot…

Okay…so how did you do the modification that seemed wrong?

by lowering the grid spacing down to a lower decimal so that the lines snap on the grid at a distance that can obtain a smaller fractional value rather than rounding up to the nearest inch. it was rounding .5" to the full 1". I needed the grid to be more precise such that it would snap onto 0.5" and show the 0.5" value. If I do not see the modeling value at the exact decimal I cannot tell if I have correct dimensioning.

I think you need to go through the Level 1 training, there are fifteen more sensible ways to accomplish what you’re trying to do here.
