Page Layout Tools

random question:

Is there anyway we can get something that “counts” on the user text. So I can add a number to start with and then every new instance of that usertext will start counting? Hope that make sense…

I’d also like to be able to do this with Letters. You start with A and then it just starts counting as you copy…?

I see you’re on it. @Gjis

Nice work on projected view – is there a way to get a perspective from this?

and possibly create details/sections from these? similar to autocad VIEWBASE functionality ?
Basically after creating the projected view. You can then make a view/detail by marquee-select an area on your layout’s projected view – NOT double-clicking into the view-port. and basically it will create a ZOOMED-IN DETAIL. and you can move the marquee-box around and the view/detail will re-populate.

It will also do this for section, where you mark the section line ON your project view in your layout, NOT by double clicking.

I would love to see this functionality.

Unfortunately, Partslist populates alllll my blocks and does not allow me to edit/delete without having to manually fix the table. Is there a way to associate these values to object names or be able to FIRST select a block and populate ONE list off of that single block ? basically it would just give me some DATA

I would imagine that the number would say the block name and count the instances.
But maybe it could also provide the com

@Gijs

Sorry for all the posts. I would like to know if we can get to the sub-blocks, the blocks within the blocks. Usually I will have my assembly as a block and all the subassy and components are nested inside of that block. I would like to be able to select the nested blocks. I do not want to have to explode all of my blocks buuuuuuuut this might have to be my workaround for now.

Thanks again, Gijsponents inside of the block maybe in a description column that extracts the layer name?

Hi @zale_orcid thanks for trying these out and for your feedback.

Not sure what you mean by ‘instance of user text’
As far as I know there is no such thing. Or do you mean user text of block instances? I think it should be possible to auto number them but it will not be dynamic. But can you explain why you need this?

Can you give an example how that should work? In Solidworks I can generate isometric views this way. Is that what you are after?

I will note this down to look into (zoomed detail). Sections however I will not look into until McNeel give us a way to add per object hatches. Currently it’s not possible to add a clipping plane to a view without activating it. There might be ways around it but it’s going to be complicated. But I agree that this would be nice to have and would make making interactive layouts a lot better.

That’s correct. Partlist will make a complete list of the first level blocks in the model. If you want a partlist of a block that contains other blocks, it’s basically the same as a subassembly. This means the subassembly should have its own Rhino file with drawings and partlist. I personally don’t work with nested blocks so if you have a test file you can share that shows how you work, I can certainly look into adding more functionality in this area.

Hi @Gijs,

Thanks for this. I’m curious if you’ve looked into Peter’s tools and see what he has for the BOM and his cool little naming things. I’m wondering if they could help here. I’m also going to be downloading Tabl_ and trying that out…

Yes Isometric. Is there a way to edit the partslist manually SO when I do the bubblecallout, it will still work on my blocks. If I wanted to adjust the number.

What I’m THINKING I can do, Is create the partlist, move it over the side (do not use it on my page)
Then create my own table with corresponding #'s to the parts list.

I will send you a file later today.

And will be commenting…

I will but haven’t done so yet

not right now, numbering is done automatically. This way when generating a part list, all items will be in the list regardless of whether they are called out or not. This to prevent missing items in your part list.
What I can probably do is make a mechanism that allows you to make a preselection of block items first and make these appear in the part list, or some sort of flag you can set to a block item to keep it out of the part list. But I’m unsure why you would need to leave out parts from your part list in the first place, I don’t want to overcomplicate things.

The video is really good —

For the bubble call outs. I can’t seem to make them small, even at size 3 they are huge on my sheet…

The reason is that I have blocks for title block & annotations… although I can probably just keep it to the titleblock and keep some of the other blocks I have regarding the sheet as a group… The other problem is that I need to make copies of blocks JUST for the sheets/views… therefore the counting is off…

For example. I’ll have my whole thing. and I’ll copy it to make an “exploded” idea of the assembly. I guess I can explode all the blocks but I don’t want to have to do this if I’m going to call out things on the exploded view…

They way in the video is how it originally was, but I changed this behavior for reasons mentioned.

It would be really helpful to send me a test scene so I can solve these kind of things. I made the tools for working in mm, I recon you work in inches?

as for the unwanted block in list: I will find a way to make things exclude from the list. I already did this for blocks named ‘titleblock’, more filters can be added, it might even be possible to add custom filtering based on block names. But then you are still having the problem with your exploded view. So maybe a block item with exclude_from_partlist key is a better way to go.

Messaging you…

Thinking…

Could you create a leader that does the bubble for me and I TELL THE LEADER what number it is?

and I can just pull out any kind of leader and create any number - in bubble, fast?

@Gijs - Thank you for this - I’m experimenting with your balloons and parts list and it looks like it will be very helpful. I’ve got zero experience with coding, but it would be amazing if we could add columns with “Layer name” or “Details” of the blocks, and then of course to be able to add headings would be very useful. For now I will do it manually, but very nice to have the Block Number, Name, and Quantity automatically generated!

Not sure what you mean with this. Blocks have objects that can reside on different layers. I prefer to keep blocks organized on their own layers, and made scripts for that as well (you can find these on my github). What details are you referring to?

Headings should be easy to add, I’ll look into that.

I’m very new to Blocks, so I might not fully understand how to use them. But I am essentially trying to use your script to create a “Parts List” or “Bill of Materials”. So to have another column linked to the Block is often necessary. When I add a new block, it gives me the option to add a “Description” - perhaps there is a way to have this description show in another column of the parts list?

Or perhaps to have it link to the “Material” of the block?

I don’t really know what’s possible… Hoping you can help add another column or two, linked to properties of the block, so I can automate a table like this:

Thank you! (also, amazing work on your portfolio!!)

Oh yes. This is a great idea.

in some way is possible change the script to INCHES?
Thanks!!

@user2168 what doesn’t work for you? I haven’t tested this in inches templates and I’m sure that there are things going wrong using the script in inch templates. Feel free to add any bugs you might find as an issue on my github page

I edit partially the code and now it’s perfect for my inch layout (I have zero .py skills, it was test and error)
the initial problem was the size (huge) but now it’s great!!
Any way to make the same using original geometry instead of block components?
I have others blocks in my layout’s template and the balloons always start in the number 21.
Now I’m trying to create a button for run the script (still no sucess) and I will try the PartList one, for this list I been useb the Tabl_ plugins.
Your work is great and useful!!
Thanks so much,
W

The script finds all blocks (but excludes blocks that have ‘titleblock’ in their name) in your file and the numbering is automatic. The balloons are made to work in sync with the PartList. Numbering is based on creation order, at least that’s my expectation, since I am getting the order of blocks as Rhino gives them to me. This way the part list will always correspond with the balloon numbers, also when balloons are missing. I believe this works the same as in solid modelers.

I can probably make the balloon also static with user defined number, but that would not work with the part list, so it’s not my priority to do that.

You can use the attached rui file, just change the paths to the scripts:
Layout.rui (35.5 KB)

I"ll test the button later.
Do you try the TABL_ plugin?
Its work fine for part list based in the name of the geometry (not block).
I assume is a completely different approach (sorry my ignorance about it).
Thanks again!!

W

In the first post the link to your Github repository it is broke. The good link:

Bit of a dumb question but how do ou download this from github? normally there is a download button for files from there
