Ordered a new "mid range" system

I needed a system that would run Windows 11.
I just ordered a new Alienware x14 laptop from Dell:

  • Windows 11
  • 16GB System RAM
  • i7 CPU
  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti w/4GB VRAM
  • 1 TB SSD

The price was right at $2k

I suspect it will run well for a single screen mid-range system and the price was good.
I shall see.

i9 is mid-range now?

That’s the CPU they offered with the RTX 3050.

Well I did few huge projects with my old GTX 1080 so I don’t think 3050 is a midrange to most of our work. And I think you can run multi-monitor setups with the new alienware.

Not according to the “recommendations”… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

With 4GB VRAM, I’ll be running just the built in standard resolution screen.
This will certainly not be my main workstation.

Dell had another model with 6GB VRAM, that would probably work, but I thought the extra price lift for the memory was too steep for my moderate needs.

I dug through the Inspiron and Precision model options too and could not find what I thought was a “good” configuration for a reasonable price.
This minimal Alienware model seemed like a good setup for the money.

This Alienware model cost a lot less than the Surface Pro I bought several years ago with the inadequate and unrecommended Intel GPU.

I can’t even estimate the number of people trying to run Rhino on these Intel GPU “craptops”. I needed a system that would run Windows 11 and wanted to have direct experience with an affordable laptop I could recommend personally.

I hope this will be that computer.

I have the laptop setup and configured.

If anyone has a specific test they would like me to try, please let me know.
