Object visible in Layout, invisible in other viewports

I’ve never encountered this before. Opened a model I’ve been working on for ~year. One of the main components (the Basin) isn’t visible in the regular model viewports. It’s layer is turned on, the object is set to use the display mode of the window it’s in. The Basin still shows in the layout drawings (1.15 Basin Section) that include it.

At first I thought I’d accidentally deleted the object the last time I had the file open, so I opened an older version and Ctrl+C copied the object and pasted it into the latest file. No object appeared to paste into the latest file. When I double-clicked into the layout view (where the Basin was still visible) it showed that there were now 2 copies of the Basin on top of each other (while still not showing either object in the Front or other views).

What have I done?

I updated to latest Rhino 8 just before leaving work last Friday.
Currently running: Version 8 SR31
(8.31.26126.13431, 2026-05-06) Commercial

Nothing else has changed with the computer or software.

Hi Water -

Without the 3dm file, we can only guess.
Did you turn off the lightbulb in the “Model On” column in the Layers panel?

Thank you Wim!

20+ years of using Rhino: today I learned about “Model On”!

The layer I wanted to see in model space showed as half on/half off. Clicking it from On to Off works as expected. Clicking it again goes back to half on/half off. Clicking it again goes to Off. (Not to On, as I would have expected.) Right-click and “Restore Default” turns it fully On again.

Not the slightest idea how that layer got set to Off as I didn’t have the Model On column visible.

Oh well, it’s fixed now. Thanks again Wim!

Hi @Water_Studio,

“Model On” is new in Rhino 8:

Thankyou thankyou thankyou. My exact situation (using Rhino since V1). Massive deadline and my model kept disappearing. Your post saved my month.
