Member - Regular -> Ping Pong?

i am pretty curious how that “Regular” state actually is being applied or achieved, is that something an admin grants or is that something that is just automatically applied to people that are here rather regularly?

i have been always regular since idk maybe 2-3 years ago when i suddenly got downgraded to member again, then a few months ago i was awarded regular again and now since i few days i am again downgraded to member.

since i am here pretty "regular"ly i am a bit surprised by this back and forth, anybody else experiencing that or can explain whats going on?

I’m not sure how accurate this information still is, but it is from the man himself:

Same here , I think it’s automatic but not “fully automatic”

It is fully automatic, and I recommend to not care about those labels at all. If you do, then log in each day

strange, well i am logged in in never log off mode, so i am basically non stop logged in.

the regular title is also quite handy because it enables one to recategorise wrong or not at all tagged topics. i sure could do a ton of other things instead, i just find it confusing and kind of annoying to become member after years of being regular then suddenly be regular for a few month then again member.

yes, i suspected an admin downgrading manually which is what they are able to do according to the description posted by @AndersDeleuran. just dont understand this ping pong back and forth, when i am very frequently here and keep posting and helping out almost every day usually.

unless someone is constantly flagging posts that i am not aware off, which could maybe explain my sudden downgrade again

Maybe this one?

I wasn’t aware of this criteria.

At the end it’s 6 characters or 7 , who cares!

I was a regular here a few years ago and can tell you that it doesn’t have any real benefits for a user of this forum. Except maybe for some blasé, neurotic sticklers that self-appoint themselves to go around correcting others’ spelling mistakes and stuff, for which my time is definitely too precious to me.

Just noticed my post was wrong so deleted it, not sure what I did to get regular

hm well i do spend a good portion of my time here, it is actually more than a hobby specifically in times when i am not too busy. but yes you are totally correct, i sure should use my time differently anyway.

still curious why this sudden jumps there and back makes no sense and feels too arbitrary to follow any rule.

@encephalon
I just liked all your posts in this thread - hopefully that’ll help! :joy: The automated system behind Discourse is weird indeed. I never knew the criteria before @Helvetosaur posted them - hell, I never considered that giving and receiving likes is almost like currency here. I’m too old for SoMe (or at least that’s what my 13 year old tells me) :slight_smile:
