Hi there, I am a rhino 7 user on mac and was wondering if I am able to upgrade my version from rhino 7 to rhino 8 for free, or if i have to purchase a new rhino 8 license? I am looking and it seems like I can only download the free trial?
Upgrade from Rhino 7 to Rhino 8 is not free. (Service releases of a version are free to license owners.) Owners of licenses of previous versions of Rhino can upgrade to Rhino 8 at a much reduce cost compared to a new Rhino 7. And until February 27, 2024 there is a lower introductory prices. Pricing from McNeel for North America is at Rhino - Online Store - Rhinoceros Authorized resellers such as Novedge may have lower prices. Elsewhere check with your regional McNeel office or local authorized resellers.
Thank you for the fast response. I am a student and have the educational license, if I go ahead and upgrade to rhino 8 it shows it is $95.00 from my current rhino 7 subscription. Will that then be valid for a full year if I do that upgrade now?
Also, will I still have access to use rhino 7 so I have rhino 7 files to use in twinmotion if I upgrade to 8?
Rhino isn’t sold on a subscription basis: it’s a perpetual license so assuming you’ve paid for a Rhino 7 Educational license, then you can use it as long as you’d like (that is, it won’t expire after a year).
If you buy the educational upgrade, you’ll have perpetual access to Rhino 8 as well. You would be able to run both on your computer simultaneously, but if you need to, you can save files in Rhino 8 as Rhino 7 in the Save As dialog.
EDIT: And—not that you asked but—the only difference between a Commercial and Educational license is that an edu one cannot be resold if the license owner wanted to. But it can be upgraded to a Commercial license for a fee, and then resold.
Thank you for clarifying this! So if I do the Rhino 8 upgrade on my educational license, I will not have to pay for more upgrades if I do not want to, and it will not require another fee the following year?
Your purchased license is permanent.
There are no annual fees, there are no subscriptions.
There is no requirement to upgrade to the next version.
Our job is to add new tools and enhancements that you think are worth the upgrade price for you. If they are not valuable for you to own, then do not upgrade.
