Lower case letter 'k' not working with Explode function

I need to explode a whole lot of text all at once, but the ‘k’ doesn’t work. it’s converts it to an ‘l’. super annoying! how to fix this? does the same thing on rhino 7 and 8. Mac. Please help!

It’s worth mentioning what font you’re using so that the developers can reproduce this.

font: Times New Roman

it happens in regular and in bold. only the ‘k’ it seems.

Hi CdeV -

Thanks.

Hi Wim, thanks for confirming the bug, but is there a fix? I have a huge amount of text in this document that I need to convert to shapes for etching…

Hi CdeV -

I take it a different font or Windows are out of the question?
You could print the troublesome text to PDF, open in something like Inkscape, and save with the convert text to path option:

When I then import that PDF, Rhino doesn’t create a hatch object for the letter “k” because the boundary is self-intersecting.

Since you are after outlines only, perhaps using the boundary curves option does the trick?

@wim,

If you look at the outline of the k rendered in R7 Windows it isn’t self-intersecting - for a 10mm tall character there is a 0.007mm gap. Does the Mac render the glyph differently? (I don’t have a Mac to test on.)

If the same gap exists on Mac, I wonder whether drawing the text much larger, exploding it and scaling down might be a workaround.

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy -

I’m not sure how I should do that other than through the Inkscape and back to Rhino loop?
That one shows like this on macOS:

The font itself in Rhino renders like this:

I tried that before posting.

Thanks for your suggestions @wim and @jeremy5 . Tricky situation with that k. Unfortunately, I don’t have Rhino on Windows. That would be the easy way. I exported it as an Illustrator file, and it seems I can use the Create Outlines function there. Seems to work. I’d prefer to stay in Rhino to do this!
