Lions Mane Mushroom

Does anyone have any idea how to even start recreating a form like this? My basic idea has got me some clustered spheres and surfaces that loft away from it (if that makes any sense) and I then projected lines to that and piped it in grasshopper, creating different thicknesses at top, middle and end. I do NOT have extensive knowledge on grasshopper, I’m definitely a beginner and learning small bits at a time.

The problem is this; by doing it that way, some of my lines have swapped references for “top, middle and end” so it gets a little frustrating. I also dont think the curvatures that i end up with look like my mushrooms references and I’m at a point where I’m about ready to start over. I’d really like them to look more “hanging” and be able to show more physics. Does anyone have ideas about how they would do this? I would so so so appreciate any help.

This is a very cool effect Daniella! From your reference picture, it seems the tendrils droop down vertically and don’t follow a sphere exactly (if you are trying to capture their natural randomness)

there are surely many ways to replicate this.
What it reminds me is this post with the growth inverted top to bottom here.

In order to make the growth I put circles on a surface, circle growths (radius, length) if there is enough place and the direction is attracted by Z vector. This need some coding.

If you want some tools to do things like that some Agent based could be the solution. Culebra could be one

More simple ways could also be used like this one

I also think of a simple solution but it also depend on what you need exactly. Is it just rendering ? 3d printing ? Do you have some initial shape to make it growth ? …

I’ve made a couple of designs for 3D printed mushrooms, but never saw anything like the mushroom you showed. So I’m working on a script similar to yours, but I’m using Bezier curves instead of arcs (to control the curvature at each end) and a random set of radii for the pipes to make them look a bit more natural. Here’s what I’ve got so far - I think the tendrils need more curvature and there should probably be more than 1 row of them.

that example you sent is so beautiful. I’ve never heard of that plug in but i’m definitely going to try it out. The second example is a great starting point. I really appreciate it !

Also it is for rendering and possibly 3d printing, and the initial shape is spherical. It’s meant to be a concept for architectural structure
