I’m doing some layouts for some furniture pieces I’ve designed for a client. I’ve looked through the various threads on here and have gleaned some stuff but am still lacking the ability, for instance, to get my dimensions looking right, or to get them to stick to the objects if I scale them. Dimensions default to huge, and also can’t seem to get lines closer to number. If I want to offset a small dimension, it ends up offset way too far away.
Additionally, how do you get it to ‘print’ i.e. create a .pdf that doesn’t look like this? kitchen_banquette_test.pdf (2.5 MB)
for reference this is what it looks like on my screen:
Hi Revel -
For starters, I see that you used the “Millimeter Small” annotation style with overrides for all annotations in that file.
You also set both model and layout units to inches, so it sounds like you started with a template in millimeters but actually wanted one in inches. It doesn’t really matter but if you want to share that 3dm file with someone, all annotation names referring to millimeters will likely confuse that someone.
At any rate, all your annotations had the same overrides. In that case, it’s better to just either create a new annotation style with the correct settings or modify an existing annotation style with those settings.
If, by that, you refer to new dimensions using the “Millimeter Small” annotation style without overrides, then, well… no.
In the default templates, “Millimeter Small” annotation styles are set to 2.5 and the layout units in those metric templates is set to millimeter. Personally, I find 0.0984 inches to be too small for any size of paper. I’d say that 3 is the minimum.
I see that your override sets the size to 0.3 inch (7.62 mm), and I’d probably rename that new annotation style to something including “large”.
The text gap is set to 0.8". If I reduce that to 0.3", that seems to correctly get the lines closer to the number:
I’m not sure what that means.
Are you scaling an object or the zoom factor of a detail?
I’ve moved the view in one of the details and notice that some dimensions are not hooked up correctly:
When placing an annotation on a layout, you need to pay special attention that the correct geometry is lighting up as you snap to it:
I’m afraid there’s nothing simple about the pen style. Printing a viewport or detail in any of the technical display modes is a bit up in the air at this point and is something that is actively being worked on. For the time being, you might want to stick to a shaded style.
Rhino doesn’t come with any layouts in the default templates. I’ve posted this example of a dynamic title block in the past:
Thank you very much for addressing these admittedly simple issues. I had noticed the millimeters in the annotation styles, and that there wasn’t an inch option but of course didn’t take the time to drill down and add it. It seems many of my issues are rooted in that.
I suppose I need to just get more comfortable with the Drafting tab in general as until this point I’ve been a strictly 3D user.
