Layout drawings disappeared

All of my layout drawings have disappeared, there are no frames or anything to indicate that anything was ever there. I had this happen to me once before, I have been drafting most of my career on Vectorworks, but have been modeling in Rhino for 3d printing. Really really simple drawings. I have never seen anything quite like this, where you could draft 5 pages and then they are gone.

The last time it happened I thought it was because I did not lock my views. They were all locked and all placed on different layers. I cannot quite imagine why this occurred.

Is there anyone in Rhino land that has a clue?

Thanks

Fran

Hi Fran -

Does that mean that the layouts themselves are gone, or only the detail objects that were on those layouts?

Can you post a 3dm file where things are missing?

Thanks for getting back to me. I sort of figured it out. This is a very simple product that I am drawing. Like so simple, I cannot imagine if I was drawing something really complex.

I have on my layers a living room environment that I put the lamp in. Other layers have the base, the top etc. I shut off all of the layers and start my layouts. All good. When I go back to my modeling space, and light up the other layers, the elements of those layers appear in the layout. lIke the walls. Then when I go to access the layouts again. They are all blank. I guess the other layers become part of the layouts.

The cure would be to start another file with just the lamp and do shop drawings fro one layer. I notice on all the YouTube tutorials, the layouts are done from one layer, where there are many drawings. It seems crazy that this is not mentioned.

The file maybe too large to post, it is only 21.1 mg. Here are some screen shots of the layouts and renderings.

Hi Fran -

I can’t troubleshoot a PDF file. I’d need the 3dm file.

I’m afraid I’m not making much sense of your description of the issue. You can turn on and off layers in individual details on layouts…

I am sorry I posted something incorrect. How do I delete that post. Here is the correct Rhino file. What is happening is simple.

The drawings that I have on layout drawings, change in the future as I change other layers that were hidden when I constructed the Layout. The layouts ARE NOT STATIC. The information transitions, while working on the screen.

Thanks for your help,

Fran

Hi Fran -

That is correct.
Details on layouts are like windows in a house that allow you to look to the world outside. When the weather changes outside, the view from inside changes with it.

If you need static versions, you can use Make2D for vector output or something like ViewCaptureToClipboard to paste images onto a layout.

If you still need to show updates to the design but need to remove objects or entire layers in specific details only, you can either use HideInDetail (for individual objects) or the visibility controls of a layer.

Note that there are two different visibility controls for a layer: The lightbulb on the right in these images globally (i.e. both model space and layout space) turns on or off a layer.

The one on the left here reads “Model On” and only controls visibility in model space. When you make a detail on a layout active, that changes to “Detail On” and only controls visibility in that specific detail.

The default order of the columns in the layer panel have the global control toward the left and space-specific control to the right, so you need to scroll horizontally to get to that column.

Thank you for this wonderful explanation. It will really help me. I would like to point out that there are similar types of drafting layouts in other CAD programs, I am sure you are aware of. As I mentioned to you, I use Vectorworks to draft, but all my work now is modeled in Rhino and Grasshopper, so I must adjust to Rhino.

In Vectorworks you create a Sheet (Layout) from a layer and only changing that layer will affect the Sheet, changes to other layers do not affect the Sheet, so you can have all sorts of things going on with other layers. Does not matter. Also the scaling in Rhino Layouts is arduous. In Vectorworks, each sheet is given tabs and boxes to check off like scales, views, and wireframe, or shaded. They also have dashed hidden line, similar to Rhino Technical. You can change views in the sheet or copy to another sheet and to another view, the layout will follow. The scales to choose from are real architectural scales like 3:1, you do not have to do math to figure out a scale. You can also scale at 2x, which in Rhino only goes 1:1. Rhino’s Layout is very counter intuitive to me, in that all layers are involved that contain that object.

Rhino is an amazing program, I do not understand why the layouts, drafting and annotations are so difficult to navigate.

Thanks again,

Fran

Hi Fran -

A detail’s scale and display mode can be set from the Properties panel:

That’s an old request that we have on our list:
RH-12604 Allow a simple scale factor to be used to set a detail scale
I’ve added your post to that request.
Thanks,

You are not limited to 1:1 in Rhino - I just did a layout scaled at 1000 x lifesize. Unlikely to be commonplace, but completely possible, so your 2 x certainly is.
