Layers in Rhino

Levels

Hello, I am a newbie and I miss something very much when working with layers:
It would be great if you could expand the layers and then select the objects that are on the layer and also move them by drag and drop. I have trouble with the fact that the options to name objects and move them in the layers are so spread out and “invisible”. It is cumbersome. I imagine a kind of central object manager with the layers and object names would be very helpful and I am also familiar with it from other applications.
Best regards

You are not alone. I think it is weird for everyone coming from other 3D software and something you have to get used to. It’s being worked on or at least in some form on a list somewhere since Rhino 4, so I would not hold my breath for it being around any time soon.

As you can see the Youtrack item is not being worked on currently: https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-54814

Also you hit on a good point: Should the object manager feature be independent of Layers or not. I think it should really be one panel with maybe different aspects. One is to go by layer and like you say, you can just fold open a layer and see the items inside it. It gets a bit harder when you talk about blocks and so on, since you can have one block with items on different layers and so on.

At this point really just anything would be great.

Otherwise if you are new I can recommend learning about:

  1. Showing and hiding objects, which you can find under the Visibility toolbar

With those you can select an object, then hide all others, etc.

  1. There is also a panel for Named Selections, where you can select a bunch of objects and save them as a sort of group that you can select

  2. Of course the selection filters also really help to select certain types of objects

Pro tip: If you hold Ctrl and select something, it will only filter for the next selection, so you dont have to toggle them all on and off individually.

Of course the sensible thing of naming objects is a bit lost on Rhino, as you can only really see the names of individually selected items. Or you have to create Blocks, but that only makes sense for things you want to place multiple times.

I still have my fingers crossed we will see this no-brainer feature this decade…
